Advice on OC i7 920 needed please

Hi All,

I have a GB EX58-UD3R mobo with i7 920 proc running on a huge Zalman copper fan.

At the moment I have her OC'd to 3.2Ghz and tried to go to 3.6Ghz but running OCCT gave me a bluescreen after about a minute of testing. The CPU temp was only in the low 70's.

Have I reached my limit at 3.2?

how much cpu voltage is used in the bios when at stock clocks? tell me and ill tell you some settings for 4ghz or 4.2ghz
 
Thanks wazza300 for the fast reply. I'm not certain but are you asking me to reset the BIOS to default optimised settings and tell you the CPU Vcore voltage or the voltage I have set her on with my OC?
 
default would be best but if you don't fancy messing then whats your current cpu voltage?

I would try for 3.8ghz to start with then move up from there once stable
 
I've popped into my my BIOS and my 3.2 OC settings are:

CPU Clock Ratio 20 X
QPI Clock Ratio X 36
Uncore Clock Ratio X 20
BCLK 160
QPI/VTT Voltage 1.320v
Vcore 1.24375v
Load Line Calibration ENABLED
IOH Core 1.24v
DRAM Voltage 1.660v
 
try for 3.8ghz

CPU Clock Ratio 21 X
QPI Clock Ratio auto
System memory multiplier 8x =1448mhz ram speed
Uncore Clock Ratio X 17x
BCLK 181
QPI/VTT Voltage 1.320v
Vcore normal
DVID (dynamic vcore) +0.0850v
Load Line Calibration auto (if you cant use auto then disable it)
CPU Clock Drive [800mV]
PCI Express Clock Drive [900mV]
IOH Core auto
DRAM Voltage 1.660v

leave all powersaving enabled,eist/c3/c6 disable c1e and use balanced power profile in windows power saving

then stress cpu and make a note of the load cpu voltage (dvid may need more/less) idk till you test and see
 
Some of these settings you've given to me I've not heard of and may not be in my BIOS but I'll of course check. When you say Vcore Normal do you mean Auto? I thought when you OC you should turn off all powersaving in the BIOS?
 
no I mean normal,youll see it in the cpu voltage list and enable all power saving except c1e

I ran my 920 for years at 4.2ghz just fine with it enabled,i was on an x58 ud5 but they are all similar to oc
 
I've taken a look in the BIOS but under DVID I don't have a +0.0850v setting. The closest I have is either +0.08125v or +0.08750v. Which should I use?

I assume it's okay to use OCCT to stress test for 10 mins?

idk till you try,it depends how good your cooler is and how much cpu v your chip needs

just keep your eye on temps while stressing and stop the test if it goes above 82c,also keep an eye on cpu voltage while stressing and tell me because you might be able to lower it later

it should use full voltage/speed while stressing and less than 1v when idle or web browsing ect
 
in cpu-z just see how much it uses as your stressing(the most it uses)it should be around the 1.3-1.33v mark

that's what dvid is,it applies whatever amount you set in it to the default cpu voltage
 
Tried those settings. CPU-Z reported 1.344v and OCCT got to 82 degrees before I then got a blue screen about 30 seconds into the test!

I have 1600Mhz rated memory if that helps at all. What now?
 
what bsod code did you manage to catch it?

it'll be something like this with various numbers

0x000000124

you might need even more cpu voltage,and you cant really push because of temps,you could just try upping qpi/vtt to 1.35v

it might have bsod'd due to that

or you could try 3.6ghz which would be

171 bclk,keep everything else the same for now

bsod 0x0000124 means not enough qpi/vtt

and 0x00000101 means not enough cpu voltage or dvid

it can be 2x and 2x plus 1,so an 8x mem multi can be 16x or 17x uncore freq

you can try dialing down dvid now so maybe try +0.07500 or round abouts and retest,temps should be lower then

be sure to run latest bios aswell

idk how good those coolers are,some coolaboratory liquid pro would help aswell,i used a thermolab baram cooler on mine but theres better now adays

you can raise/lower dvid to adjust the load cpu voltage just makesure the first two numbers are 0 so +0.0 for example

dvid allows cpu to downclock in volts at idle vs no downclock with a fixed cpu voltage
