Hi folks, I have recently upgraded my graphics card from an X1900XT to the HIS 3870 (at stock). I am fairly new to overclocking so please bear with me. :)

The rest of my system consists of Vista X64, an E6700 @ 3.2 GHz, and 2Gb Gskillz RAM.

My 3d mark 06 score has increased from 6700ish to 10600. Having compared this to the dual core / single video card list on this forum (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17811738&highlight=3dmark06) it looks like I could perhaps achieve another 1000 or so marks with an overclock on the graphics card (A similar score perhaps to jrodga2k5).

The reason I would like to try overclocking a little is that games such as Crysis and World in Conflict do not run as well as I would like, certainly not at my monitors native res of 1680 x 1050. Nor do they run particularly well dropping the res and applying FSAA.

However, I have tried to overclock using the built in ATi overdrive tool, which always tells me it passes the self test and seems fine in windows, but within 5 minutes of me loading up a game it will crash with a "VPU recovery" error. This is even with a very small 10MHz overclock.

I would have thought that I would at least be able to get to the same overclock as the TURBO, overclocked out-the-box version of my card.

What am I doing wrong here? The temps inside my case and on the GPU are not high but I can't seem to get a stable overclock. Do you recommend using ATi overdrive or another tool / program?

Also, having read some other posts, it seems a lot of people recommend setting the card to "performance" using catalyst control centre. Is this solely for the purpose of getting a higher score on 3d mark, or do you recommend always leaving it set? At the moment I have it set to balanced (or the middle option).

Thank you for reading this long post, I will not be able to post again after tonight until Friday.

I am having the same problem.

I have the Saphire 3870 with a DuOrb cooler fitted. Using Over Drive I can OC to 860/1400 and it'll pass the test every time without the temp getting above 45 degrees under load.

However the second I open ATI tool to test this the cube demo has lots of artifacts and will the video driver will crash.

Using ATI tool I only seem to be able to OC to 820/1200

Whats the secret here, am i missing a trick?
