i have no experience in overclocking but i plan to start with this system, any advice on where to start would be much appreciated, ive heard the RAM is a good overclocker?

Yeah the PC5300 Ballistix is very good.

There's a couple of very good P965 DS3 threads in the Motherboard forum, and the P35-DS3's BIOS settings seem to be the exact same. You should be able to use them as your guides.

unless you are likely to be going DDR3 any time soon, which with high performing ram like Ballistix is unlikely, then going for DDR2 only is probably the better option atm, as overclocking on "hybrid" motherboards is generaly lower.

DDR3 will remain poorer performing for a while yet, and even when performance DOES overtake DDR2, the price penalty will be steep enough to make it only worth it for those that REALLY want the "best" of everything, as the rest of use will spend the money on upgrades that will better influence performance, like better graphics cards as ATM you can buy a GTX for the price of PC3-1333-C9 ( ), and better performing DDR3 will likely be similar prices, or more expensive, for a quite a while yet untill production really ramps up, and DDR2 phases out.

I'd leave it until you HAVE to have DDR3 to go with the most recent chipsets. Core2 has a fair lifetime left in it, and Penryn (drop in compatible with P35) will be going strong for a good few years after release, by which stage you will prob need a new mobo and ram anyway.
