Hello,

Would appreciate some advice and input on this. I have a Peugeot 307 1.6 petrol which was registered in November 2007. It has just under 50,000 miles on the clock.

Around 2 - 3 months ago I noticed a slight whirring noise as I decellerated through the gears under normal engine breaking. It was more noticeable in first gear but wasn't particularly loud in general.

Jump forward to this week, this noise is getting more pronounced and is noticeable across all gear changes.

I took it to an independent garage this morning and receivd a phonecall about two hours ago stating that the noise is coming from inside the gearbox. The guy was really reasonable, said he wouldn't charge me but because of the age of the car and the potential costs I could incur, I should go back to Peugeot with the problem.

I have now phoned the Peugeot dealer I originally had the car serviced with (not purchased from them however), and it will be going in later today. The mechanic at the independent said that a gearbox (and likely clutch change) would be very costly.

Any advice on what would be my best bet?

Do I have a chance with Peugeot on getting some help financially given the age of the car and the basic fact that it shouldn't be going wrong? I don't drive particularly aggressively and always change gear in mid-rev range.

It might also be worth noting that since owning the car from one years old, it was in the dealership six times that year with an electrical bug, along with needing a new wheel bearing at approximately two years. I don't think it has ever been a hugely reliable car (lesson learnt), but a cost like this at the cars age would surely be pretty rare?

Any help and advice would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

Does it have a full main dealer service history ?

If not you have very little chance going to Peugeot

if it does I would give them a try

I would phone Peugeot customer services first rather than take it straight to the dealer as they may just charge you a diagnostic fee and then say it will be 4k for a new gearbox and clutch.

If they are not going to pay towards it no point and taking it to the dealer for a new gearbox even if they pay 50% it could be cheaper to get the gearbox removed elsewhere and refurbished. You may even find the box Peugeot supply will not be a new one but a rebuilt one anyway.

Did the garage check how much oil was in the gearbox? It could be worth getting the box oil changed before writing it off completely.

If the car's out of warranty, I can't see you getting any reductions from Peugeot. Having your current gearbox removed and inspected/ repaired is likely to cost more than picking up another gearbox from a breakers yard etc. If the gearbox is dying, I'd personally grab another gearbox and pay an independent garage to fit it.

Sounds like what happened when a thrust bearing gave way in one of my old cars. Normally not an expensive fix if it is this... Does it dissapear when you cluth in or is it there all the time?

If it doesn't dissapear when you clutch in it could also be the input shaft bearing. Either way it shouldn't be too costly.

Thank you for the reply, here is an update. Took the car to Peugeot to get it confirmed what was wrong. I wasn't charged a diagnostic fee, however i have had it confirmed it is a gearbox fault. I have been quoted 8 hours labour plus parts. Minimum charge would be £750 with a top end up to £1100.

I am somewhat between a rock and a hard place. I could ring around garages to get a quote from them. I also need to keep in mind the car is due a service, the front wheels need changing along with the brakes. All in this could be over £2000 including the gearbox.

One of the mechanics i spoke to today said a potential option could be to part exchange the car at a garage, put the £2000 i would spend on these repairs and get something newer.

Don't know what people think to that?

In answer to some of the questions:

It was serviced by Peugeot at 20,000 and 30,000 miles, the last service (40,000 miles) was by an independent garage. I am the second owner, main dealer said this might count against me.

I don't know if the gearbox oil was checked, just picked this thread up tonight and wouldn't know to ask.

The noise does go away when i depress the clutch.

Thanks for the continued advice,

Tom

Were you given more detail than "gearbox fault"?

The reason I ask is the fiance is having the same issue with her 307, hers is the 1.4. Seems to be worse in 1st than any other gear and is really noticeable when using the engine to slow you down especially in 2nd.

I know where to find the gearbox oil top up, just needs the air filter and battery removing, but this seems pointless if its likely to be something more than just low oil?
