At the moment my router is connected to the BT Master socket in the lounge via a ADSLNation faceplate as I seem to get a better speed that way.

I want to move the router to a small room with the rest of my computer stuff.

Do extension leads work well. Or am I better of leaving router where it is and just sending (cat5/5e/6 (Dont know which one)) to the room and into a 'switch'?

Thanks.

I would leave the Router as close to the master socket as possible, With the shortest lead possible.
Run some cat5/6 then to where you want it to be and put a switch there.

I used to have my router up stares and it was connected to the bt socket by a long extension, once i moved my router next to the socket and ran a cat5 cable up stairs i gained about 1.5mb in connection speed.

You could run an extension using cheap flat telephone cable and you might get a small drop in speed or run one using more expensive CW1308 BT spec twisted pair and basically get no drop. I use a combination of the extension box and twisted pair cable for mine as I need to run a phone line from the router location and I don't really want the router sited at the master socket due to kids.

If you are happy to have your router left in the lounge though running Cat5e/Cat6 will be just as easy as it's not much thicker than telephone cable.

Cat5 is old spec and has been superseeded by Cat5e.

Cat5e is good for up to Gigabit speeds (under 100M runs)

Cat6 is good for up to 10 Gigabit speeds and is somewhat thicker than Cat5e which can lead to some difficulties terminating with 8P8C (according to Wiki) and also routing I'd imagine.

I also use Cat5e.

Meh, I use my router in the furthest port from the main socket

What's a few extra meters considering how far it's gone already, unless you have terrible wiring
