Advice on random restarts

Hi guys,

My rig seems to have developed a strange fault in the past few weeks and has really got me confused as to what it could be!
As a last ditch attempt to solve it I'm seeking advice on here!

The issue at hand:

My System reboots sporadically! Typically it will last 40-30 mins before its first encounter. This is regardless of load; its happened from 30 mins of internet browsing but also under heavy to moderate load playing games.

The only consistent trait to this is each time I restarts, the next time will be considerably less than before. Example first restart could be as stated (30 or 40 mins) the next time it will be between 10-15mins.

I have tested the PSU as my first instinct was that it was power related, however all rails fall into ATX standards.

my next instinct was overheating, which I still think could be a major part of the issue (ill talk more further down*)
Temps peak around:
32 degrees for the CPU (H50 cooler installed)
38 - 40 on the GPU

*However the chipset seems to get rather hot (hot enough I wouldn't want to touch it for any longer than a few seconds!)

Specs

i7 2600k @ 4.4ghz
Asus P8-Z68V
8GB DDR3 1600
2GB HD6950
Coolermaster GX 750W

Any advice as to how to tackle this issue or what it could be would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

SC

Hello and Welcome to the Forum!

What PSU do you have?

While the unit may conform to ATX standards, there is always the possibility the unit is degrading/faulty. If you've picked up a cheap PSU, this could also be the cause.

Remove the overclock (reset the CMOS) then try again. If it solves the issue then we can look into replacing the current overclock settings with a more stable config

Yes - it could be your OS hasn't been setup to report blue screens and therefore goes black & reboots!

Hi chaps,

Thought id give an update as to where i am with this. So last we spoke i removed the Overclock profile from my motherboard, unfortunately this did not solve the issue.

Its lay dormant for a while as ive been using my work laptop as id lost motivation.

Anyway, i recently purchased a new i5 4960k and a Gigabyte Z97x-sli as part of a upgrade overhaul. i installed the new parts and the machine worked fine for 48 hours on differing loads (gaming and general use etc)

Unfortunately the problem is still intact, however, not as frequent as its only happened twice with the new components installed as opposed to everyday with the old stuff.

This leaves me in a pickle, the only thing that i can imagine this issue to be is the PSU, however i have tested the unit and it falls into ATX standards as mentioned above! I have been in contact with Cooler Master and have a RMA set up, however i'm worried that they will merely test the ATX standards and send it back.

Any thoughts or advice appreciated

could be gpu related? looked in windows event viewer to see what errors causing the crashes?

I have the z68 v pro with a 2600k and its been utterly stable, using it with 7850 and a cheap retail branded psu

I would try and borrow spare psu/gpu to test with in new and old board/cpu

In terms of GPU i have tried running both boards with the onboard GPU and my 6950 however it made no difference. I have tried the event viewer in earlier cases but i cant recall what was displayed as this was early in the troubleshooting process, next time it has a 'bad day' ill check the event viewer and post results.

The event viewer only see's the fact that the pc rebooted/shut/lost power unexpectedly which leaves me more inclined to think it's the power supply. I just hope when it gets sent away they test it rigorously; there's nothing else I can be surely
