Advice on router stats.

Hello.

I'm with Sky broadband, my router is synced at 54mb up/20mb down which I have tested with an ethernet cable and it's pretty much bob on. On the WiFi I get between 8-22mb down and 17-18mb up on speedtest.com.

I'm on the standard Sky hub running the 2.4ghz band, have requested the new hub which is due tomorrow. I'm aware this is 5ghz compatible. So my question is should I see an instant improvement on download speed when I install the new hub?

Stats are below (Could someone say if these are decent figures?)

Broadband Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed (Kbps) 54998 19994

Line Attenuation (dB) DS1:10.2 DS2:32.3 DS3:37.8 US0:5.2 US1:24.3 US2:30.5

Noise Margin (dB) DS1:6.2 DS2:6.2 DS3:6.2 US0:8.9 US1:6.0 US2:6.0

Thanks guys.

Yes. And no. The wireless networking is nothing to do with your line statistics, so the 54/20 won’t change. But if you have right clients which can use 5GHz then you should easily get the full 54/20 on Wifi.

Thanks for the reply.

So only devices 5ghz compatible will benefit, my S10 for instance. The other halfs phone is a fossil so assuming still on the 2.4, could she get slightly better speeds on mobile if the newer router has better data speeds on 2.4, say newer technology?

No, it’s almost always the client that’s the issue. Indeed, if it’s REALLY old, it could be slowing down the whole 2.4GHz network.
