Hi guys,

I've got a little cash to put into my PC and was hoping to get some input from you guys as to what would be the best way to spend it. The reason I'm asking for help is that there are so many options I've gotten a little confused. This post is pretty long, so apologies in advance!

Currently my PC consists of the following:

  • Maximus VI Hero
  • 4670K @ 4.0GHz
  • H100i w/Scythe GTs
  • 8GB Ripjaws-X RAM (C11 2133MHz)
  • 780 Classified SLI
  • 840 Evo SSD
  • 2TB 7200rpm HDD
  • Cooler Master V1000 PSU
  • Corsair Air 540 Case w/3x Scythe GTs front, AF140 back, 2x Scythe GTs top
  • VG248QE 144Hz Monitor

My budget for upgrading is ~£300. The PC is used for gaming and uni work pretty evenly. I ran SLI for a bit, but the games I play simply don't need it at 1080p and the noise needed to cool the cards to decent temps was pretty obnoxious. So I relegated the second GPU to be dedicated to PhysX, then removed it altogether as it felt like a waste of electricity!

I've been running my Classy on Skyn3t's Rev 3 bios, and left it at the default clock and memory settings (1100 and 6000) for most games as it's plenty powerful enough and I don't want to compromise the life of the card for no tangible benefit.

However, I am a big Star Citizen fan, and from the DFM i can see that a single 780 is not likely to be enough. Honestly I don't care about 144Hz really - I've found that I can't really see the difference between say 60 and 100 anyway. Ideally I'd swap my monitor for 3 60Hz ones, but space prevents that. Since I've been playing SC I've taken the Classy up to a stable 1276MHz at 1.2v and left it there for the time being. I'm averaging around 50fps in this configuration (up around 5fps from the 1100MHz setting) but would like just a little more if possible. Currently the DFM is bugged for SLI for many users, myself included, so I can't get a handle on how SLI would perform for me.

So...my first thought was a 4770K. But while many people believe that HT is the future of games, currently it hinders games as much as it helps! Often it runs better with HT off, which makes me think upgrading is pointless as even when it does work the gains are minimal:

Then I thought I could sell both Classys and buy a 780Ti, probably the SC ACX model. But that doesn't seem like a great idea as I'd lose the potential to add my second card if it transpired one was not enough.

So my next thought was a sound card. But I'm actually really happy with the audio from the Hero, and worry that a) I won't notice much difference, and b) an additional card in the case will have a negative impact on the GPUs when in SLI.

The next option was doubling RAM to 16GB. But, like the CPU, it kinda feels like an upgrade done for the sake of having a better machine on paper. I don't see 8GB being insufficient for my needs for a long time, so again the actual benefit to me is slim.

After this I considered a mechanical keyboard. I use a Corsair K50 now, and I like it a lot. I've never tried a mechanical one, but have heard good things and it's one of those purchases I'll make when I've run out of other things to improve!

Finally, I've been thinking about watercooling the Classy. I didn't do it when I bought the rig as it was my first and, to be honest, daunting enough without the extra learning curve water cooling demands. But I feel like I might be up for it now. I was thinking perhaps I could WC the Classy now, then perhaps add the second card into the loop somewhere down the line. One thing I wondered about, though, is how this might affect the lifetime of the card. If I did WC it, chances are I'd want to increase voltage and clock speeds. I'm aware that even in this state the temp's would be far lower than they are now, but is temperature the only thing to worry about? Or, to put it another way, if 2 cards were left on 24/7, one running 1.2v on air at 70 degrees and another underwater running 1.3v at 60 degrees which would die first?

TL;DR; Well, I don't blame you! But if you had a chance to look at my current PC spec, please could you advise on how you'd spend ~£300 in order to improve it?

Thanks for any suggestions/advice!

There's nothing worth getting or upgrading to.

Do you have a nice keyboard, mouse and speaker setup?

Looking at what you've got and your suggestions, I wouldn't bother with anything mate. The rig you have is solid and there is no real way of improving on what you have.

Watercooling may cost you more than your budget but will allow you yo run SLi without the added noise and heat of a other card.

Personally, keep it for a rainy day!

I know, but who needs a reason to upgrade? I have a 4670K and I'm thinking of getting one!!

Could squeeze an extra Ghz out of it with cooler temps and more cores!

Thanks for the fast and helpful replies, everyone.

I've been digging around and it seems the 4970k may be compatible with the Hero, provided Asus update the firmware needed. I'd previously thought it'd need a Z97 board so hadn't paid much attention. Nice that it's an option, maybe if HT becomes a big thing in the future I'll look at getting one. For now, though, as you say it's not much of an upgrade.

That keyboard sounds interesting. I have a Corsair Raptor K50, and it's great. Solid and reliable with useful macros for when I'm working and full RGB backlighting which the kids love. My little girl is so keen on learning her letters and all because she can turn the keys pink! I'd looked at the mechanical range from Corsair, as I've heard good things but never tried one before. If the new ones are a mechanical version of mine, with full RGB lighting, that's probably something I'd like to try!

Speaker-wise I have a little 2.1 arrangement. Creative 3150, maybe... If can't really remember! I rarely turn them up and then sound good enough to me. I've also got a couple of headsets, a Roccat Kave 5.1 for when I can be bothered fiddling behind the PC to connect the 30 cables it requires, and a Siberia V2 for when I can't. (Think I've used the Kave twice, ever.)

I've been through a few mice and settled on the Mionix Naos 8200. Not a lot of features but I just love the ergonomics. Backup is a Corsair Vengeance M65, which strangely gets used for work more than play as I find the sniper button brilliant when I'm image editing and messing about in Visio!

I think I'm going with the rainy day option. Maybe the next generation of graphics cards will be irresistible? Watercooling in definitely tempting, and from looking in the store £300 would be enough for a basic single-card set up. Might do some more research there.

On the subject, have you guys any thoughts about my question concerning the lifetime of a GPU that's running additional voltage? Trying to decide whether it's a good idea to keep my 1.2v setting active (feels like that's why I bought a stronger card and not reference) or go back to 1.156v. Temps either why are fine and very similar (maybe 2-3 degree different) but I wondered if additional voltage could be harming the card in a way not necessarily correlated to the core temp?

Thanks again for the help. I love this site.

I was under the impression that Star Citizen benefited from having 16 GB. But if I were you, I'd save your pennies until SC is actually released and then buy a 4K monitor and reinstall your second 780.

Yeah I've heard the same rumour. I went about planning to upgrade everything for SC, but realised that we just don't know enough about the requirements yet. Plus, by the time the full thing is actually released (probably at least 2 years from now) anything I did now would be starting to show its age.

However while I was tweaking my set-up last night I did realise one thing I am definitely missing - a fan controller! Having to go back into the BIOS to switch fan profiles gets a little tedious after a while, and it'll be great to be able to change from near-silent running for work to 100% case fan speed for intense gaming, and everything in between.

Think I'll pick up a Lamptron FC v2, looks like a great product and won't look too weird in a vertical alignment. Off I go to the order page!

Well I used to run it at 4.4GHz which required 1.3v. I decided to drop it down to 4.0GHz at stock voltage and honestly I don't think it's made any difference! As I was a little worried 1.3v was too high (even though temps were always excellent - the H100i & Scythe GTs really impressed me) I just left it at 4.0GHz.

I guess when I go back to SLI I'll return to 4.4GHz, but at the mo I don't think it's limiting me too much. Could well be wrong, though! I notice you managed to get 4.6GHz out of your chip, can I ask what sort of voltage you needed for that?

Right now I have two 'profiles' I use, one is leaving the GPU and CPU at stock volts and getting what I can out of them for a super-reliable 24/7 setting (4.0GHz for the CPU and 1150MHz / 6600MHz @ 1.150v on the 780). I use this most of the time, as most games I like (Warframe, Hawken, Batman AC, Dynasty Warriors) simply don't need more than that. The other setting involves cranking the CPU up to 1.3v for 4.4GHz and the Classy up to 1250MHz / 6700MHz at 1.187v.

One other little thing I may invest in is a blowhole on the perspex panel of the case. If I put a 140mm fan in there and point it at the GPUs I think that'll help with SLI quite a bit.
