Hi all.

I'm going to upgrade my son's ageing dual core PC for his Xmas pressie. I'll be getting some new parts and using some of his existing ones too, and looking to spend about £600 on the upgrade.(edit: he's just said that he will add a couple of hundred pounds himself, if it gives him a 'serious' rig...so even more scope now!!)

I'm keeping the 2TB storage drive he has now, along with the Radeon HD6850 gfx card which he only got in May, plus the DVD/CD burner....

So I'm looking for case & psu, mobo, i5/i7cpu & cooler, ram (8gb min) - and definitely an SSD for the OS (he has Windows 7 which I'll be putting on the new machine!)

Not really looking to overclock yet - but possibly might have a go later - so a third party cooler would be the best bet I guess.

His gaming at the moment is the not too taxing, World of Warcraft (so I'm told...as I've no idea about the necessary gaming specs) but he would like to be able to play Crisis, Black Ops, and all the newer games at more or less max settings.

Can you give me some pointers please - much appreciated..... :)

@altrewin...Thanks for the very quick response to my query.

I've been having a bit of a mooch since posting it too. With regards to the case, how about the Antec 302 instead for a few quid more...?

(I've got an Antec case and was impressed with it's build quality when I got it a while back.)

Also re: the SSD....are Intel better regarded than Samsung's nowadays? (no idea...!!??)

Also...is a 500W PSU enough nowadays??? Was going to look for a 650+ ....again though - don't know myself!

Case is a personal preference, but from what I've heard the Antec 302 is very good. Regarding the SSD, I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) the Samsung is a bit better, but you most likely won't notice the difference in day to day use, also a decent 500w is more than enough for a mid-range graphics card + quad core, even with overclocking :)

Cheers pal....gonna keep looking and comparing - thanks again ;)

As he's not going to have a massive amount of progs on the main HDD - I could poss go down to a 128Gb SSD...maybe (so scope for the 'better'(??) Samsung drive..)

On to the mobo+cpu+ram hunt now..... :D (good fun this, haven't done it for AGES...since I put my last system together!)
