Hi guys and girls. I am nearing the stage of purchasing a new system. this is what i am thinking of. It will primarily be used for gaming. I don't use photoshop or anything like that. the main issues are whether to replace the E8400 for a Q9550, and whether to get a GTX275 or even a 4870 or 4890, any advice will be much appreciated.
  • Asus P5Q-E Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
  • G.Skill PK 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit
  • Samsung Spin Point F1 SATAII 320GB 16Mb Cache Hard Drive <9.0ms 7200rpm - OEM
  • Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply
  • Samsung S223Q Lightscribe 22x DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Black SATA - OEM
  • Antec Nine Hundred - 2
  • Noctua NH-U12P CPU Heatpipe Heatsink with NF-P12 Fan - AM2 (+) - LGA775
  • Gainward GeForce GTX260 "Golden Sample" *216 Stream Processor* 55nm SLI 896MB DDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI PCI-Express - Retail
  • Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 2 x 3.00Ghz 6Mb Cache 1333 FSB Dual Core Processor - Retail

Quite similar to what I just ordered a few minutes ago for myself - only real difference was I went down the ATI route.

Good spec though - plenty of potential in the E8400 - lots of people reporting they are running at 4GHz+ quite happily. :)

alrite cheers guys. yeah i didnt know if the price was justified by the increased performance on the 275. guess i will order with the 260 then. does gaming on 1920 x 1080 influence the decision on gfx card? as i am also contemplating whether to upgrade to 24" or 22" monitor from my current 17".

I gather the resolution or size of the screen wouldn't affect the choice of card so much as the choice of how much RAM the card has.

In all honesty I think the choice between the 260 and the 4870 really does come down to what games you play. You're right to check out the benchmarks for what you actually play and that will tell you what your best bet it.

Regardless though, they are both cracking cards, you'll not go far wrong.

I'd go for the Kinston HyperX PC8500+ 2x2gb 5-5-5-15 2.2v kit at £42. It is the fastest PC8500 kit you can get for the lowest price.

Re the graphics card choice, I have a 260 @ 1920x1200 and it deals with it pretty well.

Either way, the next step up from a 260/4870 would be a 4870X2 or GTX295 IMO. The 275 and 4890 aren't fast enough to justify the price difference.
