I'm looking at getting the following bits from OC...

Corsair 4GB DDR3 DHX 1600C9DHX Twin3X (2x2GB) (TW3X4G1600C9DHX)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.83GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor - Retail
Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 10000RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD3000GLFS)
LG GGC-H20L Blu-Ray Reader & HD-DVD ROM Serial ATA Drive - Retail
Lian-Li PC-B25B Aluminium Midi-Tower - Black
Asus Rampage Extreme Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
Corsair TX 750W ATX2.2 SLI Compliant PSU

My dilmea is on the graphics side.

  • Option 1 - ATI HD4870 X2 (would ideally like this in crossfire set-up in a few months)

Or buy one of the following

  • Option 2 - ATI HD4870

I'm a bit concerned about the PSU output and the connectors for the possability of option one in a crossfire set-up.

Any comments on the system as a whole would be appreciated.

Thanks

I think the PSU would cope quite well with 2 x2 in cross fire. Do you really need to cross fire? I think one x2 would be more than enough, although what res do you game at (I presume you want this PC for gaming LOL).

Personally I wouldn't crossfire as its just a waste of money IMO, and I would get a P45 board instead (if you decide not to crossfire). This would also allow you to save quite a bit of money on the memory as you could get DDR II.

*edit* Actually I have just checked and the x2 apparently has a 260watt or so peak power consumption, so having two of them in crossfire with a quad might be pushing it a bit with a 750W.

PC is for gaming as well as heavy Photoshop work as well.

Res of monitor of TFT is 1680 x 1020.

I would like the option to be able to upgrade components in 1-2 years time. I'm guessing that the X48 chipset will be around for a while?

Would the 1000W Corsair be a better long term option?

I personally wouldn't go crossfire for 1680x1050 (also my current res). I would stick to 1 4870 x2 and get a corsair HX620w PSU.

In 1-2 years time there will be newer, better components out which will probably mean you will need to upgrade your motherboard for anyway. There is no real benefit from getting DDR III memory at the moment so its best to stick to the much cheaper DDR II. DDR III will probably be main stream in a few years so you will be able to pick it up cheaper then.

The X48, X38 and P45 all seem to support the same CPU's so I dont how going for the most expensive is going to benefit more for future upgrades. Its entirely up to you though, if you want to get the "latest" bits of kit then by all means go ahead, but you can get just as good system without going mad!
