Advice on this system please

Hi all, I am looking for some advice re the build below, please. What I am going to do hopefully is a bit of gaming - I am hoping maybe to get into elite online, love Skyrim, will probably play GTA and witcher.

I am also wanting to use it to study for Microsoft exams and want to try and set up a series of virtual PC's that will have server 2012/16 and then various client pc's. I am not really too sure on how to set this up and if it is possible to do that due to the reset factor though so if anyone has any knowledge on how to do that it would be much appreciated.

I have an old 3TB SATA drive that I hope to put into the new build an old unused version of windows 8 pro retail which I hope can be upgraded to 10 pro.

I am not sure if it will be cool enough temp wise to do what I am needing it to do ? any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Hi, I am not planning on sli at a later date. I may change the operating system to a server 2016 which is why I was going 64. 32GB is probably where the VM's should be at as I am thinking of running about 5 VM's 2 server plus 3 client. I am trying to come in as close to £2700 as I can.

At present the plan is to hook it up to a plasma that is only 1080 but hope to move to a 4k TV shortly just not done any research yet. Any monitor recommendation would be great. Obviously that would be on top of the 2.7k price

Yes I totally get where this review is going and personally I have never bought a board over £150. I have no overclocking experience and was drawn to the one click overclock and dual nic plus wireless. The other key thing for me was the reinforced pci sockets as a result of the weight on the graphics card.

I have really gone back n forth between the z170 and the x99 board with 6900 processor. I am now at the stage where I have probably seen and reviewed so much I have got blindness fatigue by it all lol. That was why I thought come on here and see what the experts thought and maybe give me some ideas as to where I am going wrong as I suspect that I am.

I would really like the pc to do me a good 4-5 years minimum so would like the board and processor to be as future proof as it can. Yes I know that does not stack up given boards are due out in a few months but my current PC is on its last legs (2008) and hard drive smart errors so its time to bite the bullet and get a more modern pc lol.

As I say any recommendation that can help me would be appreciated folks and thanks for all questions so far I really appreciate them.

In terms of the difference between my build, your build, and Micky's build what offers the most future proof option?

In terms of the x99 board option vs the z170 build option, what is the real benefits from choosing one over the other?

Hi Guys thanks for your advice, if I am going for a x99 system I need to up my budget. The one key thing that I would like is as much future proofing as possible to last me at least 5 plus years.

I then need in this particular order the system to be able to :

Function primarily as a leisure PC that I can use to study as and when required.
For VM's I need 2 network cards.
I would like 2 m.2's and ideally latest thunderbolt 3 / with backup HDMI 2.0 should my graphic card go belly up.
I would ideally like as many USB 3.1 Type-C Type A as possible.
I would like it as easy as possible to get into overclocking but at present I have never done that.

I am comfortable with the graphic card for when I get the chance to play games on the PC.

What I am looking for is your opinions on have I got it future proof for the time frame that I need it to firstly and secondly if I have picked a wrong part and one that you think would be better without going more than 20 plus or minus on the part I would like to hear your thoughts.

It is clear from what is above that we now are pointing towards the x99 instead of the z170x and thank you very much for that as I said earlier I have been going back n forth over these 2 boards and could not get it in my head which way to go.

I think that I need to add a 1tb SATA drive for the VM pcs as it will be too slow read write on the standard 3tb that I was going to stick them onto. I have now come up with the following alternative and wondered if you would give me your opinion on it please.

Does that only come in packs of 4 ? I was just wondering if at some point in the future I needed to up the memory would 2*16 sticks be possible? or do I need to buy packs of 4?

I mean for the better type of ram you are suggesting if it is a higher speed?

LOL point well made lol, I have gone with your 2nd choice of Kingston. I am not too sure about the power supply - I have gone with the evga make that was said earlier and gone platinum - no idea difference between gold and platinum on power supplies but figure better to go for more expensive for the components? Would this be a good fit just in case I add further SATA or other components further down the line?

Thank you, that is a great article. I really appreciate your time and help with this. By the ratio there I would only need 2 cores as I think I need 5 for windows 10 with the dc included. In terms of games how does the AAA game titles impact on cores required?
