So my build is a bit all over the place at the moment , I want to do a little updating now and do more next year when funds are better.

  • ASUS P7P55D-E Motherboard
  • I5 650 @ 4.2 (Corsair H60)
  • Corsair Vengeance 16GB 4x4GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz
  • XFX ATI Radeon HD6850 Graphics Card PCI-e 1024 MB GDDR5
  • Ocz Stealthxstream Ii 600w Power Supply
  • Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm SATA
  • Antec Three Hundred Gaming ATX

Things I want to do:

I think the best option would be to get Pro/Mobo/SSD/Win8 done now Hopefully that will cost me under £500 if possible.
Then new Graphics card next year , I got hold of another 6850 for about £40 so hopefully crossfire will suffice til then.

Opinions please

Yep sound thinking.

However if you want to upgrade your rig specifically to improve gaming performance then perhaps buying a GTX 970 now would be best, and upgrade the CPU/mobo later?
I can't comment on 6850 crossfire so perhaps that will tide you over.

Great choice on CPU/mobo bundle - I just bought this myself! Gigabyte are also giving £25 cashback on that bundle so that's more money in your pocket.
Definitely go for an SSD, the Kingston SSDNow drives are great for the money.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£43 Saving** £347.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £77.99
1 x Kingston 120GB SSDNow V300 Drive SATA 6Gb/s 3 2.5" (7mm height) Solid State Hard Drive - (SV300S37A/120G) £49.99
Total : £485.57 (includes shipping : £8.00).

The problem is that the "i5" 650 is really just a higher clocked i3 500 CPU which has only 2 physical cores and 2 logical cores...so his CPU is already well-balanced with his 6850.

The cheapest way to get significant performance increase would be to get a 2nd hand i5 750/760 or i7 860/870 if not minding paying the extra for the 4 logical cores, and then spend the remaining budget upgrading the graphic card and grabbing SSD.

If I was in OP's position and want to upgrade on a budget, I'd try to hunt down a 2nd hand i7 860/870 at around £50 or less, get a SSD (250/256GB minimum) and upgrade the graphic card to a GTX970. Getting a new CPU and motherboard would eat up too much of the budget.
