basically i've currently got a macbook Pro mid2010 2.4ghz, 8gb ram + 128gb SSD Vertex 2.

i've also got my gaming PC (see sig) and tbh i'm not using it as much as i should. I download DVD's and burn them plus i play the odd game on there but not as often as i should.

i'm thinking of selling both and combining the money to buy a newer mac which will be able to handle all my needs. So basically burning/editing dvd's as good as my PC.

what are peoples thoughts? and what spec would i achieve with my budget from selling both?

I have recently had a similar issue. I had an iMac, Macbook Air and PC Rig.

I wasn't using the the MBA as much as I should have for what I paid, so condensed the MBA and iMac into a Retina Macbook Pro and don't regret it and use my PC rig still for gaming.

I would say you are looking at around £400+ for your laptop if you use https://www.sell-your-laptop.co.uk/quote , I found them best price for my MBA. Wasn't much less than I could sell on ebay for and it took away all the hassle e.t.c and risk of ebay.

Your PC rig I am not quite sure maybe a similar amount i'd guess considering it's 2 generations old tech and soon to be 3.

So you wouldn't have as much as maybe you thought to play with.

Are you looking for a Macbook/ iMac/Mac mini?

not after a quick sale as i'd quite happily keep both tbh.

If i was to upgrade i'd prefer to get the best deal possible. to add to the pot i could add another £500 if need be

As a start i'd get your exact Macbook specs and put them into that website above to get a rough quote on what is worth. So you know the minimum price you want it to go for.

Your PC rig, I would probably sell as individual components on the members market here as you will get more that way.

If you work roughly on the basis of £1500 to play with.

You could then get the top end Classic 15 inch Macbook Pro. Then upgrade to 16gb Ram yourself. Later when funds allow swap out the HDD for an SDD. That's what I would probably do anyway.
