I currently have an i7-2600 @ 3.5Ghz with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti and 16gb ram. Now I noticed on some games the fps is rather slow, would upgrading the graphics to say a 970 or 980 be enough to run games at medium/high gfx or would just building an entire new pc be the better option.

I don't need ultra high gfx with 100+ fps just a stable pc with no noticeable fps drops.

I'd go for a 390 personally. If your processor is a k series can overclock that a bit too, but its still a good processor tbh, just gpu needed.
