Here goes, my first post on the OCuk Forums .......

I am looking at upgrading my current system, and seek advice on a few things Im unsure of. Current system Im using is 12months old now, and have a budget of about £1000.

core 2 duo E6600 @ 2.4GHz
Asus p5k-e WiFi intel P35
4gb corsair XMS2-6400C5 ddr2
Geforce 8800 GTS OC 640MB GDDR3
a cheap 500W PSU

I wish to install a gtx 280 video card ...... but think a new Motherboard will be required with PCI-e 2.0. My thanks in advance ......

your current MB will be fine for a GTX280, although there will be a slight performance drop compared to using a pcie2 slot.

your main concern is your cheap 500W psu, this is likely to die if you put a gtx280 to it.

your next concern is the 2.4GHz e6600, you should overclock this to ensure no bottle necking

This seems to be enough for what you need.

GTX280s are too expensive at the moment, unless you're running a 30", I don't see the point. Your motherboard and RAM are fine. Might want to update the motherboard's bios for the Q9550 CPU though (do not update through windows).

Do you need a new HDD aswell, screen, OS, etc?

present have 500GB HDD, 22" flatscreen monitor, running XP 32bit. would like to eventually run 2 GTX280's in sli .... so would need to upgrade motherboard to do this, any recommendations on Motherboard front?

Plus, unfortunately, the only Nvidia chipset that doesn't majorly and totally suck is 790i and that means buying DDR3. Honestly, the costs will just keep mounting.

You really do not need GTX280SLI on a 22" monitor, or even a 24" for that matter.

4870x2, unless you just like nvidia, in which case a 280. run it in your current board with either a new duo or q9550. get decent cooling and oc the cpu. Also get a corsair or similar branded psu whatever you do.
