Hi chaps

I am getting very frustrated with my system and my lack of knowledge in computers is making me in need of some advise please

my specs are as follows

all stock out the box clocks
fx 8350 cpu colled by h100i
r9 290 vapour x oc edition gpu with 14.9 drivers
msi 990 fxa-gd80 mobo
windows 8.1
evga 850 supernova psu
aoc 144mhz monitor

i am getting massive jumps in fps. assetto corsa struggles to get more than 30 fps previously 80fps+ no i no assetto is in alpha stagges so maybe to be expected but bf4 im jumping from 85fps down to 30fps all the time. I also get these problems on cod and fifa iracing and f12014

I have run 3d mark on skydiver and got the following results which to me seem ok

benchmark_zpse54a2e85.png

is there anything else i could look in to so i can sort my problems or a setting i have missed...

thanks in advance
matt

I would really look into overclocking the cpu. It should raise minimum frames in those games. If not I would then investigate if there is an actual problem underlying here

my problem is i have no idea how to overclock apart from copying other peoples settings.
i have had no problems before with these games with exactly the same settings and hardware so im guessing some sort of fault

Have you checked temperatures? Might be something not keeping cool as it should. Also, try to check utilisation, see if you can see if one component is working particularly hard.

Things like CPU-Z and GPU-Z are helpful for checking things like these :)

Have you tried to look for a pattern?

Does it always slow down in the same place in the game or similar situations?

Try turning all the settings down to minimum and test it. Then turn stuff back up one by one to see if it's a setting causing it.

I know MSAA is very demanding and can murder FPS - start with that maybe?

in response to the above questions....

vsync is off

temps are all fine i have ran hwinfo and cpu-z not noticed anything to say there is a problem

i havnt noticed any patterns as such will try turning down and go from there, i havnt changed any settings anywere in game or on my system it was fine before though..

i have 8gb of ram

I was going to try and do a clean install of everything start againsee if i have any conflicting drivers or something like that.

If it was me I'd probably re-install Windows from fresh, install 1 game and test it for a few hours...but that might be quite a drastic step for you.

The reason I was asking about anything with abnormally high utilisation, be it CPU or GPU (or other, HDD access? etc) is that there could be something like an antivirus conflicting with something, or disk indexing occurring, or a mining virus using your GPU etc etc. All of these are unlikely, but still worth a check. Or if you're going to reinstall anyway that should wipe these out.

I would advise raising the CPU voltage/Frequency.

To be honest, I would have thought those slow downs are CPU bound. So if you can raise the clocks the minimum FPS will be higher.

i have set a thread in cpu to ask about overclocking i have done some tests in 3 games with my brother who has exactly the same system as me and we were both getting the same results after reseting amd drivers for gpu so hopefully thats that problem sorted..

want to try clock to 4.5mhz see what happens from there

the antivirus possibility could well be an issue as i installed McAfee and got the problems after this maybe now i have uninstalled drivers and re installed its sorted itself out

Was it the 14.11 Beta driver ? I done a fresh windows install yesterday, and had loads of problems with it, I've since gone back to 14.9 and all seems fine now.

Yea I put the 14.11 beta on and it all went to pot problem was I changed to much at the same time uninstalled drivers and back on 14.9... what made a big difference was uninstalling the hdmi sound drivers

I over clocked my cpu to 4.6ghz and put mantle on I very rarely dropped below 90fps on bf4 last night

that's good to hear, keep an eye on it over the next few days and see how you get in.

I always stick to the latest non beta drivers for my AMD card and I've never had any issues but then again if I did I would just blame the GPU due to the age of it lol

ive just tested a gtx 970 msi gaming gpu ran 3dmark exactly same settings both stock clocks with my new cpu clock and was surprised the r9 290 won it...
