Advice on what cpu to get....

Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P6T SE Rev 1.xx

cpu: i7 920

Im currently running with these but need to get a new cpu as my computer is constantly restarting and iv narrowed it down to the cpu being the issue so i need to replace it.

What would be a good replacement for this that would work fine with that motherboard.

Im running 2 5870 ati cards in crossfire and a 900watt power supply too and would aprechiate on which cpu to get.

Are you sure it's the CPU and not the motherboard? CPU's are usually very resilient compared to the latter unless you damage them with excess voltage.

Its been overclocked since i pretty much got it, its not the ram, its not the cards, the psu worked fine in another computer so all thats left is the cpu i think? How would you tell if its the motherboard. Would other things stop working?

It only shuts off and restarts when i have a lot of things running or when im on a game. its pretty much unplayable with games at the moment as it just shuts off and restarts.

Maybe id be better off with an Overclockers bundle to get both the motherboard and cpu replaced?

If not i can't seem to find an i7 920 new anywhere so what else would be compatable thats available now?

Only way to be 100% sure it's not the motherboard is to replace the CPU but then if it is the motherboard you'll need to buy a new one of those too. An OCUK bundle might be the best course to take as you'll get lots more performance too.

Like ubersonic says though check your temps and it might be worth removing a GPU to see if that alleviates it.

If its been at the same overclocked speeds for awhile and this restart is happening recently then its most likely overheating ..... reapply the thermal grease to your CPU as the grease might have dried up and dust out the PSU/case ... hopefully that will sort it :)

iv tryed running each gpu seperatly with one removed and it still does it. temps are fine. it restarts when my cpu is running about 44 degrees when im just browsing the internet and things so i wouldnt say its a temp problem. Its not overclocked at the moment as i took that off the first time it started doing it. Already dusted out the case and components aswell.

What would be a good bundle to go for? i dont really want to spend too much as i was hoping to just get a replacement cpu but if im going for a bundle i guess any of them will be a performance increase compared to what i have now?

Also one other thing, even though it goes off when running a single gpu it happens more frequently when i have crossfire enabled compared to when i disable it. Does this indicate anything?

Also i was thinking about going for this bundle since its just over £100 more than getting a i7 920 cpu on its own, Would this be a good choice?

Krypton Z77 660i" Intel Core i5 3570K 3.40GHz @ 4.40GHz DDR3 Ivybridge Overclocked Bundle

Thanks for the help so far.

I used to have one of these with an i7 975

And had all sorts of problems including what you mentioned in your OP

The mobo is long gone but the CPU is still with me going strong in a R3E mobo with no problems.

These days I will only use top end OCing motherboards because of the extra durability built into them.

Should i go for that OC bundle then i posted above. i havent upgraded in 2 years anyway so a bundle is probably the best option for me.

Theres no way its the cpu mate.
it will be the board if any of the parts that are monitered via the system overheat it will shut down. so vrm's , northbridge and southbridge is were I would be applying new TIM

hmmm, its only an upgrade over i920 if you dont use any heavily threaded software...such as rendering; for games etc i'd expect a new i5 to be quite a jump though.

yeah it would be mostly for games. The only downside with that bundle though is the motherboard only does x16 and x4 crossfire so i would be losing a lot of bandwith from the second card. I might upgrade to a single card soon though as im not really a fan of crossfire. too many issues and not enough game support.

Good choice. Sell the 5870s, grab a 7950, install the 12.11 drivers and overclock to 1ghz+ on the core and you'll have a 5870 x2 beater ;).

How much of a performance increase would that be over 2 5870 cards. iv been looking at a lot of the latest benchmarks but none of them feature the 5870 cards in crossfire so its difficult to know where they would slot in.

Try seeing if you can find a comparison vs the 5970 as that is basically two 5870's on the same board :)

I own a pair of HD 5970s and up against the HD 7950/70s they can not compete. When you take into account the lack of vram, the latest drivers and the fact that the 7xxx series are top notch overclockers its a bit of a non contest.
