Hi all. I have my old computer sat in the spare room doing nothing so I thought I'd turn it into a relatively nice computer for my girlfriend. The current specs of it are the following.

Coolermaster haf x case
Intel i7 920 @4ghz
6 gb ram
Gigabyte x58 ud5 motherboard
Corsair hx750 power supply.

I am needing to buy a graphics card, an ssd and a hard drive for it to get it up and running again but I'm unsure on what to get. Would an AMD 580, Samsung 850 EVO 256gb ssd be OK? For a 2tb hard drive I'm not sure what to get. Do I just get the cheapest I can find?

Thanks :)

With what OS, drivers and background processes hog memory 6GB isn't that much even for just few open programs like web browser with lots of tabs on background.
For mass storage 5400rpm drives are quieter and cooler running than 7200rpm drives.

Also you sure that cheese grater case is up to acceptable style standards?

6gb isnt a too little for running a system for general, im running 6gb in my sig system just find and the SFF system im currently on only has 4gb and so far running fine, i do use dedicated graphic cards in both so a bit easier, however assuming you have a 4gb + 2gb setup then swap the 2gb stick for an identical 4gb and away you go, 8gb is still plenty.

dont know what you are wanting to spend, but this should see you through whatever she be using it for.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £397.43
(includes shipping: £10.50)

The ram I have now is 3 sticks of 2gb in a triple channel. I guess I can look into getting more ram too. The case is a bit dated but I'm sure it'll do the job. Although half of me is saying let's just get a new case and cpu/ram/motherboard too lol.. I see the Ryzen 5 gets recommended a lot. Would a Ryzen 5 with 16 gb ram and the items listed in the previous post be a better idea perhaps? My girlfriend isn't a huge gamer but she would like to play Player unknown's Battlegrounds and I don't think she would mind low/medium graphics settings.

Sorry to go into another direction with my spec me thread!

With first gen Intel , you'll see a gain going with Ryzen 1600 or Intel coffeelake i5 easily. Few review sites out there that pit all the generations against each other. Was a big jump from gen 1 to 2, then a good increase to gen 3 and after that baby steps, least 8th gen is getting there with extra cores
