Hi all first post here so go easy ;)
im wanting to upgrade gfx card from 7800 gt and was thinking of getting the HIS X1950XTX.
Would you please let me know if this is a good or bad move.Or an alternative.
I have £240 and thats my lot.
Thanks :)

slight problem, thats £50 over his budget.
1stly, what are your reasons for wanting to upgrade?
2ndly, what do you use your pc for?
3rdly, what monitor resolution?
4thly, cant you just wait a month and a half for the GTS to come down in price a little, or for the lower memory versions to be released? they destroy the XTXs and itll be better value for money

Trouble is there is nothing in the £200-£250 bracket. This GTS is only £30 above your limit:-

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-052-OK

Otherwise, the its the x1950 XT is the next card to get, but that is cheaper and slower:-

PCI-E Cards,

7600 GS (£69) , 7600 GT (£88) , 7900 GS (£108) , x1950 Pro (£125) , x1950 XT (£165) , 8800 GTS (£270) , 8800 GTX (£375) .

The X1950XT is a tiny bit slower (can be OCed to XT-X easily) and is a damn sight cheaper, get one of those. Not sure why people are suggesting the 8800GTS. I suggest that card a lot but come on, he said £240 is the lot.

These two are the best X1950XTs as their cooling solutions are ace. :)

Get the 8800GTS. Dont listen to those who says otherwise ( they just cant afford it ).
Neither can the OP, apparently. So try reading the thread before trolling.

100% agree. The rest of the money can be saved for something else. :)

I don't agree, for just £30 more than he was willing to spend on outdated tech he can get something that should last him a few years/

He could also wait for the 320MB GTS in the middle of next month, but is that the point? Not really.

We don't know if he wants to upgrade right this minute, and the fact is that he said £240 is the lot.

Well I dont know about you, but I have to work 6 hours to get £30. And £240 is a lot of money in anyones eyes, I'm sure.

Personally I think the x1950XT is the best one to go for. (at this moment in time!)

£240 is hardly a lot of money.

Didn't see the OP's budget, apologize for that.

And ulfedhjinn, please take back the trolling comment. The OP intends to spend £240. For £30 more, he can have a card that performs twice better than 1950XT-X. And I am sure £30 is an amount that can be managed if the OP tried.

You also don't know his financial position.

In his opinion £240 is a lot of money, and we have to appreciate that. You can't say it isn't just because YOU can throw away that kind of cash and think nothing of it.

Yes I understand. But if the OP is willing to spend that amount, might as well try to save £30 more and get a card that will perform so much better and last for quite some time.

I won't take the trolling comment back for reasons that I don't really think I need to explain. Accusing people of being "biased" against it in some way "just because they can't afford it" is childish, and that's putting it nicely.

About your post though, the 8800GTS does not "perform twice better" than an X1950XT-X. You're thinking of the 8800GTX there, and might want to check your facts before telling people why they should go £30 over budget.

I know that 3D Mark isn't a game, but the full article is here if anyone wants to see the rest of the benchmarks.

Also, let's not forget that the OP specifically stated that £240 "is the lot" in his own words. Unless he comes back and says that he can afford an 8800GTS, we should just leave it at that. If he can afford one then great, there's no way he could possibly be disappointed with the 8800GTS. :)

I agree in that respect, sometime you have to spend money to save money. But if he can't afford the extra £30, the £80 below budget of the x1950XT is a great option considering it's very close in performance to the XT-X.

I agree. The OP could even buy something like a 7900GS or X1950Pro to tide him over until the cheaper 8800GTS comes out if it was an option really, but unless he comes back and says that £270 is within budget, suggesting an 8800GTS now is a little pointless.

If he is truggling to make the £240 then a pro at <£130 is probably his best bet in all honesty! Means he can put some cash towards something else instead.

No point getting an xtx now tbh! its just a waste of money due to the GTS being £30 more expensive

I think he should just wait a bit and save a litttle bit more for the 8800.

But the guys who are saying £240 is not a lot of money? Get real. I'm sick of this attitude on these forums, you all expect everyone else to have high flying jobs that dish out £50 notes every hour. A lot of people are on near to minimum wage.

Agreed, I would say that £240 is a lot of money. But if you spent £30 extra (12.5%) and got 25% more performance and DX10, then you'd want us to let you know.
