I am specing a machine that needs to last 3 years. I want it to still be a decent performer in 3 years time.

Which will be the better option

E6700 with 2 x 8800GTX in SLI

or

QX6700 with 1 x 8800GTX

its cheaper to get just what you need now rather than spending a fortune on what you think you will need in 3yrs.

Do your self a favour

6300
DS3
2 gig DDR2
8800GTX

400 for the mobo combo and a nice fast DX 10 card to go with it.

in a few months quad core will plummit.

and that sytem will be fast enough for anyones needs .

It needs to last 3 years because thats how long it will take me to pay it :p

Plus i get 3 years onsite maintenance so if any goes wrong i am guaranteed to keep the machine going....

I try to build the best machine i can at the moment to give myself the best chance of a resonable machine in 2 1/2 years time ;)

Its not a work scheme...

I have bought 2 machines from a Manufacturer that i cant name here for obvious reasons....

I use them because there customer support is first class...(and trust me i need good customer support ;) )

I would like to love to spec up and build myself a machine.. but to be perfectly honest i am a lazy b*****d so when it goes wrong its much easier to get on the phone and get somebody else to fix it 4 me

well just get the best you can now then.

quad core and sli.

seems a waste though

Beacause by the time these will be mainstream then there will be new stuff out thats twice as fast and half the price!

If you play games, get the first. If you have a greater interest in encoding video or something equivalent then get the second.

I cant believe games will actually require 4 cores for 'decent performance' even in 3 years time regardless of what intel and alan wake developers might make out.

Moores law says the level of technology doubles every 2 years so those systems are definetly premium now and will be decent even in 3 years, imo

only thing thats gonna last you for 3 years is either an xbox360 or ps3.

My current 3 year old rig is

2.8 P4
X800pro 256mb
1gb ram

ok she is 3 years old but she still got plenty of life in her for the kids

and in 3 years time i will probably do the same again
