This is my current system

ASUS Maximus Ranger GTX970
16gig ram EVGA SuperNova 1200W Platinum

Now I was going to upgrade the CPU,board, ram and gpu to a 980ti and a bigger non gsync monitor for about £1k, will my current system cut it if I got a gtx1080 and a gsync monitor? would I be better keeping my current chip and just upgrading my gpu/monitor?

Just upgrade your GPU/Monitor. A 4790K and a 1080 will be more than capable of running a G-sync monitor. I doubt you'll achieve 4k on a single 980Ti/1080, but you should be good for 1440p.

1070 is a reasonable upgrade over a 970.

Are you having problems with the 970 or just have an itch to upgrade?

I would go for a really nice screen and see how the 970 works.
I'm still using a 970 on a 4k screen and although it's not quite quick enough to game at 4k I'm going to wait for better gpu's before I upgrade. 1080 is fast but a bit expensive for me, in another year that performance should be better value.

No need to upgrade cpu if your just gaming.
