Hi Looking at updating the gpu to a gtx 1050 ti 4gb but im wondering if being ddr5 it will a: run at all or B: Run but slowly so stick with my 960?
This is my current spec:
Win 10
MB:asus p8p67le
Processor i5-2500 CPU @ 3.30GHz, 3301 Mhz, 4 Core

One question is...is that even an upgrade worth doing.

And for that ive just had a quick look at where the 1050Ti is against a GXT960 - https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Gigabyte/GTX_1050_Ti_G1_Gaming/29.html in the grand scheme of things and still not convinced as its not a huge leap forward, I guess the extra Vram would help if yours is a 2Gb 960?

The memory on the gfx card is a seperate thing from the board, so no worries about it being a different version. I wont get technical about it, but its for the gfx card only and thats about it.

One other question is...is your i5 2500 a nonK or K version of the CPU?

Also your PSU could do with a swap, they are not very good.

Depends on your games as well as CPU mentioned above

Seems you'll get 4-11 FPS - taken from Ryzen 4c/8t 1300x
I7 6700 4-13 FPS gain- different games tested then above
https://youtu.be/dWasgbvXr0k

Not sure on the system used but 2-9 FPS gained

If your rocking a 2gb version and like to play games at high settings then yes, could be worth it, though would personally push 3gb gtx 1060 or 4GB 470/580. Most games now use average 2.1-2.5GB vram at 1080p high settings

If you haven't got the cash for gtx 1060 3gb , save up and may find next generation takes your fancy .
I use to jump every other generation with *60 series as would give me enough time to save and sell the card for a price of a half decent game in steam

@OP

What is it you are try to achieve? an upgrade for the sake of it or more performance in games?

One more question is what monitor do you have?

Thanks for the reply. Its the 4mb version so maybe 1060 would be more worth while.
Not sure on version but its a very early i 5 (6 yr old) so im going to guess non.
Ill add a psu to wish list!

IF you download say CPU-Z that will tell you exactly what CPU you have.

Or even right clicking "my PC" in windows explorer and clicking on properties should also tell you what CPU it is.

If its a K version then you can overclock it to 4.5Ghz atleast with around £20-25 spent on a performance cooler.

computer 6yrs old now and struggling a bit with some of the latest games on higher settings, just looking if i could boost performance or if it would be better to save up for brand new shiney thing;) my monitor is a samsung syncmaster t220/t220g from 2008, i was wondering if buying a 27inch 1080p monitor would be an upgrade in itsself??

cheers, ive always stayed clear of overclocking and i dont want to test my PSU too hard lol but its a good idea!

Your card won't be a bottleneck for the GPU , but your gaming or I'm guessing your gaming at 1080p and CPU can effect performance . Newer games do favour high clock speed .
You've bought an expensive chip at the time and still is , so use it to it's fullest .
RTS games can be very CPU intensive due to all the units in play, just have a look at ashes of Singularity and TW.Warhammer 2 ...
Give it a shot and you should see some increase in frame, but to make the the newest games look pretty and you'll to bump up .
Boxing day sales soon, if you manage to do the advice above and OC your core, have a look at your performance before and after .

Spend as much as you can on a GFX card is my advice, that will give the biggest instant gains.

The resolution of that screen is less than 1080P so surprised the GTX960 isnt coping well. Star Citzen is obviously still being worked on and thus not going to be optimised fully.

16Gb of RAM might help in Star Citzen.

And of course the PSU.

Also you say you are not technical...

Do you have the RAM in the right slots (should be in the same colour slots) to be in dual channel mode.

Cool.

Do you have a SSD? they wont help the frame rate in games (but can help loading times etc) but they add an awesome "snappiness/reponsivness" to the system that can help it feel better.

no ssd just a very nearly HD. Because im not techy i tend to shy away from adding/changing things like Hd/ssd etc. Tend to just upgrade gpu/memory till the comp is so old i can justify buying a new shiney pc;) Hence why i have never clocked, though i notice there is an automatic overclocking feature on this card.

Ive had to delete that link as its a competitor.

Wait for Xmas for deals etc.

Maybe could get a 6GB version.
