Hi there, just bought a new mobo and noticed it has 24 pin connector for PSU, my PSU has 20 pin plug for mobo will this still work I notice that it will fit ok leaving 2 pins at either end

thanks

Your 24 pin plug should be segmented so that you can remove it or use it safely in a 20 pin ATX plug. It should work fine assuming the PSU meets the MOBO specifications and that the MOBO is not too old.

I read it as the board has a 24 pin and the psu has a 20. In which case first buy a 20 to 24 pin adaptor and if you run into problems get a new psu.

If you were to plug it in without a 20 to 24 pin adaptor there should not be 2 pins left blank at each end but 4 at one end. It will only fit one way.

Yeah, I skipped that part. It will be a block of 4 empty pins left empty on one end of the MOBO socket. And, as you pointed out, the pins are keyed so that you can only plug the socket in 1 way.

I have seen lots of issues in general with the 20 to 24 pin adapter. Personally, I would not do it unless the OP has a fantastic PSU with a 20 pin ATX plug.

Yes, in the long run a 24 pin psu is better, but if the psu is decent and the budget is tight theres no harm in trying an adaptor.

Which psu is it btw? If its a rubbishy one anyway then this is a good excuse to get a better one.

Make sure you get a decent make, anything from: Corsair, Seasonic, Antec, Tagan, FSP, Ocz or Enermax.
