Advice re T-Mobile 'MDA Pro' & web'n'walk

I am very close to signing up for a:-

T-Mobile MDA Pro on Flext 25 + web'n'walk (@ £24.38 pm, giving an allowance of £60 to be used between talktime and text).

I personally prefer functionality over appearance so im not put off by the MDA Pro's size. I am out of contract so have the luxury

and need some advice before taking the leap:-

1. How do you rate the MDA Pro against the competition?
2. How do you rate web'n'walk? Is it too good to be true?
3. What does 'Subject to Fair use policy' mean in real life? I know and understand that the service must not to be used for modem access etc...but is your normal surfing usage capped to 40mb per month?
4. All other advice greatfully recieved.

I always value you advice and knowledge in these maters so please, please help me re the above queries.

Thanks in advance

Bob

As long as you don't use it with a laptop for modem access, or streaming video, radio etc, and also VOIP (so basically using the phone to surf the web and pick up emails) then there is no cap for the £7.50 web 'n' walk. I'll say that again so there is no confusion :) there is NO cap (ie, no 40mb download cap etc). I think the reason this has finally come about is because the networks realise that it's physically impossible to download huge amounts if you are only allowed html surfing.

The web 'n' walk might seem to good to be true at first but basically this has been a long time coming (flat rate unlimited GPRS, and actually the web 'n' walk will use a 3G signal if you have it, and if you have a 3G phone) and t-mobile have got there first.

Incidentally, I signed up to the exact same tarriff the start of this month (with the nokia N70 though). A couple of things to note, the flext tarriff is an 18 month tarriff (which is to expected for such a good deal I think). Secondly, as I'm sure you know, t-mobile currently have 25% off the tarriff, BUT, if you ever change your tarriff then you will most likely lose this (I am not sure if this would affect something like an upgrade to say flext 35, you could maybe check with t-mobile though). Also, this means that if you want to remove the web 'n' walk part of the tarriff you will lose the 25% altogether (ie, lose it from the flext package too). Just something to bear in mind.

If you want to find more about the MDA pro though, can I direct you to a different site that deals with windows pda phones: Modaco. They have probably the best (UK based) community for windows smartphones and PDAs. If you haven't used a pda phone before then you can have a lot of fun with them installing things and such.

im also looking at getting the mda pro, for a pda with wifi thats a great deal for £100!

What memory does it come with?

EDIT doe sit have wifi as t mobile mention nothing of it, but a couple of review sites say it does then some say it dooes not?

EDIT 2 Zeta you say there is no cap? so what is the 40mb they mention? Why would they mention that when there is no cap seems odd?

I don't know what comes in the pack, probably best to just ring up t-mobile, they have a special phone number for help with web sales, if you proceed to the part of the site where you need to enter your billing details etc then you will find the number there. It takes SD cards if that's any help, I just don't know what size it comes with. According to thier site it comes with wi-fi, and it's 802.11b (see here )

Professional
The T-Mobile MDA Pro is the fourth generation PDA in the MDA line of products. It brings complete connectivity, seamless secure access, and total control. Contains a full specification PDA, a tri-band mobile phone, a full QWERTY keyboard and broadband Wi-Fi access - all in one device. Advanced features include video conferencing with two cameras, email attachments and edit or read Microsoft Word and Excel documents.

As for the web 'n' walk, they used to have a 40mb cap yeah, but since the start of april they have changed it to be "unlimited" so no cap as long as you don't try and abuse it with streaming video etc. They also introduced the flext + web 'n' walk combined package in april too, although I think you can add web 'n' walk to an existing tarriff (not 100% if this applies to all tarriffs etc). But anyway, on thier site you can see the fine print doesn't mention the 40mb cap anymore.

(one last thing to help avoid confusion if you do any reading around, t-mobile plan are rumoured to be bringing out a "professional" web'n'walk package some time in the future that will let you use your laptop connected to it, this will cost £8.50+VAT (=£10 compared to the normal £7.50 for the normal web 'n' walk). This professional package WILL have a cap, but it will be 2GB.

Many thanks zeta101

I have just got home from work to find your posts and you have fully answered my question about "web'n'walk" [im going to sign up!!!!] ... just one question, if my preference is to surf, is the MDA Pro the best option under t-mobile? ..... I think it is, but would appreciate some feedback

Thanks again

Cheers Bob

As far as i can tell the MDA pro is the phone with the biggest screen from what t-mobile, which will be a big plus if you want to surf. For me, the main bad point is the MDA pro's size and how it looks (for a phone), but since you said that isn't a problem for you then it looks like a great deal for you.

By the way, I don't know if you know this but if you actually select the flext25+web'n'walk package and then go ahead and see what phones you can get you only have three choices! the nokia N70, a pink(!) MDA compact II or the MDA pro, for some reason you don't have choice of the full range of phones. Out of those three, the MDA pro is the best for mainly surfing.

Some people are saying that you can use your phone with a laptop for straight browsing and t mobile wont know/dont mind.

Is this actually true? or wishful thinking

Because if they do mind then its the mda pro for me if they dont mind then its the ~N70 with a laptop

just get a basic plan without web n walk, wait till end of month when W&W Pro is released and add that for £10. that will allow you to use it with your laptop but theres a fair use of 2GB
