Hi all,

I've just moved into a studio flat which is a garage conversion a good 20 feet away from the main house. I've yet to properly set up but it was evident from experimenting with my phone and tablet that the wifi I'm sharing from the main house is not going to be strong enough for a consistent connection.

I'm wondering what I can do to get this signal stronger. The studio flat has its own electricity meter / mains power switch (although my landlady is covering the bill) so I'm not sure if a homeplug solution would work (any advice here?)

Has anyone had any experience with the various antennas, extenders, repeaters or boosters that are available? I was wondering if I could ask my landlady to set up some form of repeater nearer the back of the house, then I could use an extended antenna to my desktop to make the signal as strong as possible.

Any advice here would be very much appreciated.

maybe get a direction antenna and an access point that can have its antenna changed to it?

A homeplug COULD be worth a try even if in vain considering you can get a pair for as low as 20 quid here and there but if it worked would be a really easy solution (we tried this in the exerciser below but it never worked).

At a friends granny flat the main house was about 15 meters away and going through 2 brick walls, in his case we used a belkin wireless adapter bridge (F7D4555uk) sat right next to the window so it only had to go through one brick wall and it worked well. we then pluged the belkin adapter into a wifi access point to give local wifi on another channel.

You have to just place things near windows to try minimize loss and almost anything is doable if you have equipment with decent transmitters and receivers.

Also don't underestimate the value of just changing channels on your main access point, it can make a big difference.
