Advice regarding Samsung Home Theatre

I have just received a new Panasonic TX-50CS520B today and whilst the picture is great, it doesn't do pass through to spdif like my previous Sony.

The Samsung Home Theatre system only had a spdif input for surround sound. I'm aware that spdif splitters exist but I'm after a tidier solution.

Does anyone know if I replace the main unit with another Samsung Receiver which supports ARC whether this would solve my problem?
 
According to the manual it does/should pass audio through the optical connector - after all that's what it's there for.

It looks like it has to be correctly enabled in the menu.
 
It only appears to work for content on the TV, i.e. netflix app and DTV.

Thje Dolby Digital stream over HDMI gets lost.
