Alreet Guys & Gals,

Thoughts and advice required........

I should (in the next week or so) have funds for a new rig.

It will predominatly be used for Folding but also used as a Media Hub for the home network.

Considerations will be made for:
  • EVGA SR-X: Dual Sandybridge-EP 2687W
  • Tyan S8812: Quad Opteron 6276

Power requirements are not an issue but overall cost is.

Case requirements also needs to be considered as well as cooling solutions.

As always - any input is greatly appreciated.

OK well if its in the next week I doubt you will be able to buy either the SR-X or EP 2687W as they just aint available.

If you are going for bigadv return then I'd stick with AMD

So, why tyan? You are more likely to find stock from a reputable shop on the H8QGI-F-B

Only other thing is choice of CPU, have a read here on Interlagos vs MagnyCours you might be better served getting a slower speed MC, but see what you think.

Cheers Biffa,

It was an interesting read.....

Funds will be available very soon - but will wait until I see prices of what EVGA/Intel have to offer given that new 12 Core MC's are mucho £'s atm.

But I get the feeling the xeons are going to be mega expensive. You can get 1.9GHZ MCs relatively cheaply, then there's the bay of e to consider :)

You're not wrong......

Other issue would be Case - the Supermicro option would require a suitable case whereas a lot more options are available for the EVGA.

All you have to worry about for the G34 quad boards is the height above the backplate and the ability to put the PSU in the bottom

Enermax Fulmo GT looks like a good cheap bet

Thanks for that - I was'nt aware of this particular case.

From what I have read so far the Xeons haven't clocked that well, should be interesting to see what happens. I've definitely had less trouble with the Opteron rig than the SR-2

If I wanted to run Windows on the Supermicro (Quad Socket) - which version of Windows would I need that would recognise all four CPU's?
