following on from my thread here http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18377144

Basically I asked the man who made by website for access to it as I have a friend who does websites who will look at it for me and do some changes.

It took him 3 weeks to give me the info and when he did I do not have full access via filezilla to everything. Just some folder with nothing in it. So I believe he just gave me access to a certain part of my website with nothing in it. Via FTP

I bought the domain name from 123 reg. Then 2 months later I found this man to build me a website and I gave him access to my control panel in 123 reg so he could move my domain name and build the website and host it (via vidahost) £100 for 1 year (hosting and build)

I have access to the email account he set up via Ipswitch footholds horde. I can change the passwords on there so that is fine.

I message him last week telling him I do not have full access to everything on my website and he replied 5 days later with "I am looking into it"

I getting extremely fed up with his slowness, how can I take my domain back. On 'who-is' it shows my address as the registered keeper.

Also can I copy/save my website and files just by going on the website and saving it?

I do not mind my website being 'down' for a while, I can then sort hosting out myself.

Just need advice on how I can get my domain name back into my hands.

Thanks.

It depends how complex the site is, but if it's just straight HTML then you should be able to clone it quite easily (post/mail me the link if you want me to take a look).

If you still have access to 123-reg then get into your account and check he hasn't transferred your domain away to another registrar/his account on 123-reg as that might be a bit trickier to recover.

Hi. I shouldn't really post url here as could be counted as a business and I believe forum rules say you are not allowed business help? I could be wrong on that though.

I have access on 123 reg. I had a look last night and cannot find anything about my domain in my control panel so I think when I gave him access he moved it to somewhere else for hosting?

I will send you link via email.

It sounds like it has been transferred away from 123-reg, so it no longer looks like you have it. All you usually do is point the nameservers to the hosting company and the domain stays in 123-reg. You would have had emails confirming this, unless the email has also been changed.

Pretty sure you're wrong on that one.
What you can't do is come in here and say hey, come check out my business. It's a bit different when you need genuine help.

All my details are still correct within 123 reg. My email is still my email etc. Maybe I should get in touch with Vidahost.

No, it's nothing to do with Vidahost.

If it's a uk domain name and someone has transferred the registration to a new registrar, ring Nominet, they can get it back for you providing you can give them some kind of proof of ownership.

yes just spoke with a guy at Nominet. Incredibly helpful man. I can get my domain name back very simply, gave him my details and he confirmed everything etc. Would just cost me £12 to get it back.

Will see if webmaster will give me all the details now I know I can take my domain name back so easily.

Thank you.

Now I presume when I do get my domain name back and put back into my account on 123 reg, I need to then look at someone/company who will be able to host my domain name and website.

Be nice if I can save everything from my website then just rehost with someone else and then I can make changes when I need too.

Both Vidahost/Tsohost are very well recommended here. If you set the account up with either of them then you will have full control over the hosting and your files. You're not going to get better hosting. You can leave your domain registered at 123-reg and point the nameservers to Vidahost/Tsohost (you just need to update two text boxes) and they'll do the rest and you're in full control.

I'd look at creating a backup of your site before you contact the person who set it up for you, just in case they delete it in rage.

Never got an email off you if you did send one by the way.
