Buying a partial upgrade to PC (Motherboard, Processor, Memory) and looking for suggestions!

Budget is 600-700, and flexible.

It is to go with an ATI 5870 if that makes a difference

Thanks all

hey,

i7 920
Gigabyte X58-UD3R
3x2GB pretty much any DDR3 memory, no point paying the extra for the higher clocked modules

I'd suggest a Titan Fenrir cooler with it if you don't have one already, just in case you want to overclock it in the future xD

How about:

A titan fenrir or thermolab baram cooler should take you up to 4GHz on this.

Maybe go for the OCZ obsidian RAM instead since it is not 'optimised for intel'.

Mainly gaming, and also media centre type tingz, i should mention i would be going with intel, amd *shudder*.

Few people have mentioned the peformance increase wont be massive, maybe worth holding off for now?

3.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo
4gb DDR2 Memory
EVGA 680i motherboard

running 32bit windows 7, perhaps update this to 64bit too but thats a different matter

tbh then. id be inclined to go down the amd route and pick up a hex core. it will do everything u wanna do easily and have loads left. also 1156 and 1366 intel sockets are gonna be eol next yr so hopefully you may have more of a upgrade path with am3.

if u got the money so spend. hell to it!

See, i just feel a bit more comfortable in the intel world, experienced with it etc.

I'm not fussed about the socket being eol, something will always be eol soon.
