I have 2 laptops here to look at which belong to a friend. 1 of them the screen has gone too dark to see anything, you can barely see the windows logon screen. The other works fine but has a line down the centre of it. Now they are both the same model laptop and he asked me if I could take the screen off the one that has gone dark and put it onto the other. Now I am wondering why the darkness has happened, maybe the backlight has gone or something? and could this be fixed. If I was to put the dark screen onto the other laptop it would still be dark I take it?

It is likely that the backlight is dying out, you would either need to repair the backlight or the inverter to get it working again.

I see what you mean, would suggest you first take the inverter from the working one and test it, otherwise you will need to change the CCFL backlight bulb. That should do the trick but make sure to do it with care.

changing the inverter hasnt worked, so it could be the bulbs i guess. Im now thinking maybe I could fix the screen thats already on the good laptop somehow. What is normally the cause for lines down the screen, please say its fixable.

if the line is always there in the same place no matter what, then it's faulty/damaged panel and will need to be replaced. If they move/flicker/aren't constant then the GPU is faulty/overheating or you have a loose connection somewhere I'd guess..
