Advise for Parents Rig

Hello,

Basically my parents pc keeps overheating - idle temp of about 50 celsius.

Spec as follows - NF7-S, XP 2500, 512 Geil, 40gb HD, cheap case with PSU nearing the end of its life...

I've just recently re-applied the thermal paste to the cpu, but surely it still shouldn't be at 50 degrees idle should it?

On a small budget, this leaves me to the following conclusions.....

a) New Case + PSU + CPU Cooler. Thinking about the Antec NSK4400 and something like a CM aero 7?

or b) New Rig

It's only used for browsing/word processing, so that's why i'd ideally like to take route a)

Any advise would be much appreciated...

Yep, get a cheap antec case with psu, they are unbeatable value for money and excellent quality. See if just the better case airflow sorts the temps out, if not then start looking for a better cooler.

You should check the chipset fan if it has one as it will probably be on its way out on a machine of that age, and the gpu fan.

do you just mean the cpu cooling fan or the northbridge fan?

cheers for the advise mate, exactly what i was thinking, will order the case now!

I mean the northbridge fan, and also the one on the graphics card if there is one, they don't usually last very long. Listen to them when they spin and see if they sound very rattly or noisy, if so the bearings are on the way out.

Once you have the new case then you can see if it solves the problem or if you need to do anything else.

Ordered the Antec NSK 4400 case mate, should be with me soon.

Re-installed windows since the rig shut down with overheating, and since applying the thermal paste it seems to be running slightly cooler - around the 48-52 celsius mark. Need a new psu and case anyway as my old case is about 6 years old, and the psu is dying.

So, all seems good. Thanks for your advice mate.

I used that case recently in a friends build. Was very impressed with it. Good build quality for the price and the Rear 120mm fan has its own fan speed control. Also has a CPU duct which kept CPU temps down to around 35C, this was Pentium 820D with standard Intel cooler.
