Advise me a router please

I'm a bit of a nub when it comes to networking etc. At the moment I've got a Belkin f5d5231 but theres a generic fault with it ( lots of people get the problem) whereby it can't take 10mb broadband and disconnects every 5 mins ( thereby makign online gamign impossible).

I have cable broadband ( i hear that makes what your router is different).
I also would prefer a wired router, ( all the pc's are wired).

I've sort of solved the problem ( i think) I've connected my pc by usb to the modem, and lef the router still connected. (Is there any danger with firewalls etc with this?- I've got kaspersky, but just wondering....) The modem im using is the Motorolla Surfboard Sb5100i
