I have a road bike and my second bike is a cx/cyclocross bike. I want to start taking my son out on the back in a rear mounted seat for rides but finding a decent suitable bike at the moment is unlikely (plus I don't know if I can justify a third bike to the Mrs).

What's your thoughts on just converting my cx bike? That will mean swapping out the spd's for flats and probably shortening the stem and adjusting the seat for a more relaxed position. The frame is triple butted aluminium but with carbon forks and seat post. I imagine it will be strong enough.

Bad idea? Sell it and try and just try find a decent used tourer? What say ye, people of much greater cycling knowledge than I :)

This is the exact same bike that I have

why not a front mount and use the present bike? Mates have a front mount and I've just got one for my 16month old - they get to see way more than a rear mount seat, so more fun (for them)?

for under 15kg there's something like the OK Baby Orion for over 15kg there's something like Shotgun seat

CX bikes are usually pretty strong (admittedly not as much as a MTB, but surely no worse than a touring bike?) so could use that - swap to flat bars and a riser stem if space is needed around the little-un?

Great idea, I didn't actually know you could get these seats up front! How dim am I? I'll look into them and thanks for the reassurance that my cx will probably be OK. My LBS told me the same today. Now to look at my options.

Shorten a stem on a cx bike? They're usually stubby little numbers already.

CX bikes are generally built strong and those boardmans are pretty tough from what Ive heard. It'll cope I'm sure.

I think I might need to put a straight bar on anyway. Off to my LBS on Tuesday to weigh up my options.
