I am going to build my first pc

I have stripped and rebuilt my old PC many times in regards to taking apart cleaning and replacing parts that have failed . so although i would consider myself a NOOB when it comes to computers i do know what goes where to look at but know nothing else

I guess the only thing that is daunting is the cabling and a slight worry of compatible parts . If you have some advise i would really appreciate it

i also want to keep some old parts from old pc if possible ... MY PSU failed a week or so ago but the pc did do me great service.Only in the past two years ,did i find it hard to play games .. I only really play the fallout series world of tanks and ships ..the rest of the games i play are old more basic strategy games like hearts of iron 2 but i think with the new card i would venture into more power intensive games but like old skool games

My first question would be:

is 8gb of ram DDR3 corsair ams3 ( 1600mhz ) still ok to keepin the new build , to save money on a new build ..will this be enough for the foreseeable future ?

MY components i wanted to get are as follows - i am not sure what case i need to get or PSU ... the CPU fan also seems to be a problem for me to decide on ...some help would be good

i want to base the PC around these components ... these are a must have but the rest needs to be a sacrifice to maintain my budget

AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 9590 Blk Ed 4.70GHz (5.00GHz Turbo) (Socket AM3+) Processor - OEM

MSI 970 Gaming AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

Powercolor Radeon R9 390 PCS+ 8192MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics

I am not sure about the POWERCOLOR as a brand - is there any difference between brands in this range ..personally i like sapphire ( previous cards and never broke and i have owned a few )

i believe the recommended PSU is about 750w .. or do i need to go higher as the CPU is 220 ? do cheap brands cut the mustard or should i stick with better ones ?

the CPU COOLER - i do not want to have a a liquid cooler , i am a lazy person who just wants to plug and play- with the odd cleaning duty ... the CPU from what i read is very HOT and a 220w fan is needed ... the only one I can see is the artic freezer 13 pro but can't find it on sale not even on the site , i think it's end of line ... the rest of the CPU fans i have seen have little spec out-lining the cooling spectrum of cpu's .wattage ..

my final question is do i need to buy cabling ? i assume all the cabling will come with the relevant component ?

any help would be great -

i have just gone for the top amd processor but did read it is just the 8350 facorty clocked ... is it worth getting it ? or will it be superseded

8Gb is plenty for gaming even now and will be for the foreseeable future, I would not reccomend more than 8Gb unless you are running RAM intensive programs such as video editing.

Powercolor Radeon R9 390 PCS+ 8192MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics

I am not sure about the POWERCOLOR as a brand

Get the PowerColor R9 390 PCS+ and soon. It is currently on offer and is a fantastic card, it definitely beats the GTX 970 is most situations. PowerColor are a trusted brand that make great cards.

i believe the recommended PSU is about 750w

750W will be more than enough with a single GPU, I would only buy from reputed sellers since cheap PSUs can be very dodgy. Make sure it is at least 80 plus bronze certified (pretty much all are nowadays) and the following are very trustable brands: Corsair, EVGA, be quiet!, Silverstone, Seasonic, Fractal Design and Antec.

the CPU COOLER

I would recommend any of the following: Noctua NH-D15, Noctua NH-D14, be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 or a be quiet! Dark Rock 3.

I'd only choose the Dark Rock 3 if you don't plan on overclocking. There are other options out there, but I would personally use any of these. Make the decision based on price and asethetics, whatever suits you really, all will serve you well if your case cooling is good.

my final question is do i need to buy cabling ? i assume all the cabling will come with the relevant component ?

All cables that you need should either be included with your PSU or your motherboard (SATA cables for your hard drives and any disc drives will be included with the MoBo).

The CPU is pretty much an OCed 8350, as in they are the same chip the main difference only being their core clocks (even their memory support is similar). I would go for the 8350 of the two, it is a well used CPU in the gaming community, and although you will get more performance in most games with the 9590, it is not worth the extra cost.

thank you frank - that has really done wonders for my doubts and reservations ..i had on the build

i think you cleared everything up for me - and am very happy to go ahead and buy it all now

i think i will go with the FX8350 - i did read a little up on it Vs the 9590 ... the 9590 just seems a beast to cool down and most people have said what you have just said via reviews . I also really wanted to avoid liquid cooling .. i can't be bothered with the potential leaks , refilling or anti-gunging

good to know about the powercolor card it is cheap compared to other brands it's only £220 - which will save money to divert to other parts of the build

again thank you

I would suggest going for an Intel build if you have the budget.

unfortunately i have not got the budget - i know they preform better but it would just make me go way over budget

No problem! I'll keep an eye on this thread in case you have any extra questions :)

If you aren't comfortable with/bothered by liquid cooling then jsut don't bother. AIOs often have similar cooling to air coolers, especially if you compare thsoe of the same price, and custom liquid cooling it's not worth the money if you are just going for performance.

Air coolers offer great cooling that is simple and if you get a high end option even has plenty of head room for overclocking if you're interested.

Below is now what i have in my basket - dropping down the CPU ( 125w ) will see me be able to use my coolmaster cpu fan from old pc , the ram you said should be ok cosair AMs3 8gb @1600mhz ( over 4 slots )

just now looking for case and that should be me -

AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8350 Black Edition 4.00GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail

MSI 970 Gaming AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

Fractal Design Edison M 750W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply

Powercolor Radeon R9 390 PCS+ 8192MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (AXR9 390 8GBD5-PPDHE)

MY budget is about £700 but if i can sacrifice enough - i want to get a new TV for a monitor after Christmas - with a cheap end case i could come out around £550 then i can pick up a unwanted Christmas present after XMAS ( TV 1080p 40" )

is there anything i have missed ?

i have 2x deskstars HD's and optical drives -already and a few 120mm fans knocking about stripped from previous pc's

i will get a SSD after xmas

Assuming you are carrying over the storage from your previous system then I think you have everything you need :)

Whatever TV you buy, make sure that it is 60Hz and not 30Hz, otherwise you will be stuck gaming at 30fps and it would just be awful :p

I would do something like this. As the cpu is locked then you could run the stock Intel cooler for the time being.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £547.06
(includes shipping: £11.10)

This is more for my own info than a comment, but is there any reason to go for the Z97 chipset mobo and a locked CPU? Could he not shave a few ££ and get an H97 board?

The cheapest H97 board on here is £64.99. You could go with a H81/B85 chipset but then you would lose some features, and it is possible that you would have to update the bios.

just bought it all, ended up with this :

AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8350 Black Edition 4.00GHz (Socket AM3+)

Fractal Design Edison M 750W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply

MSI 970 Gaming AMD 970 (Socket AM3+) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

Samsung 250GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid

Powercolor Radeon R9 390 PCS+ 8192MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (AXR9 390 8GBD5-PPDHE)

Kolink Octagon Midi Tower Gaming Case - Black

TOTAL : £624.14

added a SSD .... my old one had gone and i was relying on the 2x Hitachi deskstars

I am a bit of a KNOB when it comes to buying stuff - i always buy the same stuff if it has worked out well previously

one of my Hitachi deskstars is from 2008 and it still runs like a dream - that's like 7 years for a HD ... in that time i have used and buried countless seagates and western digital drives

i do own a couple of stock Intel PC's for downstairs and another room ( quads ) I use them for shopping but have had problems with both of them, graphics wise and blue screens . They were bought the sametime as my AMD PC and have been used less than quarter of the time compared to my AMD ..one intel has since broke and the other i am on

My last PC lasted years must be at least 5+ just with a few changes here and there ( amd black edition 965 quad 3.4ghz )

if this new build lasts as long as my previous AMD i will be very happy - I spent about £700-800 on my last build and it was money very well spent in my opinion . I most certainly got £800 worth of enjoyment out of it .... my PC used to stay on for days at time . It was only in the past 2 years did I notice that i couldn't run certain games ...

Intel seems a bit over priced to me also - i guess i have the mentally of always rooting for the underdog - which in PC terms is AMD so makes me a bit set in my ways
