Hi all.

My wife has started her PGCE in music and needs to learn Logic thats only on Mac....
we are PC household....

so she's thinking of getting a mac.

at the moment she has a high spec HP Envy - which she loves as its light and small.

none of our friends has a mac that she could borrow for 3 months or so, so one way os to buy one, and potentially in future switch to it fully and sell HP.

can you please advise on a spec for one that would work best, possibly for a longer time if she would be up for keeping it ?

other apps she is using is office suite etc, so nothing CPU hungry etc
long battery battery life mostly welcome

thanks !!

unless there are other ways to get Logic easy on PC or borrow one ;)

With regards to Logic, if your other half doesn't currently plan to use any external or third-party hardware (think audio/midi/controller types devices/interfaces) or plug-ins (and just using those built-in to Logic), then as @Alpherah says, the base* spec MacBook Air M1 (Apple Silicon) would be a good purchase.

If however she does need to use third-party hardware/plug-ins, the safe bet here would be to stick with an Intel MacBook and spec it according to budget.

Essentially Apple is in a transition from Intel to their own Apple Silicon and you're currently at the mercy of third-parties to update their products with support (/drivers). Some manufactures have been on the ball and their products are supported, some aren't but do work unofficially, some don't work at all and some kind-of-work-ish-but-with-quirks.

No issue with MS Office on either the Apple Silicon or Intel Mac's.

* Personally i'd opt for the 512GB storage upgrade (+£200) but it all depends on budget etc.
