Hi there,

I am looking to upgrade my antique gas/coal powered system could you tell me please if the following would be compatible?

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM
Asus P5W DH Deluxe WiFi (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Crucial 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-4200C4 Dual Channel Kit

I would also be looking to use my old Psu unit (400w)and hard drive (ide i think) and case for this combi. Would you also be able to spec me a decent graphics card for gaming for around £160.

Looking forward to your replies. :)

Welcome to the forums, they are all compatible in that they will work but I'd change the Ram to either PC5300 or preferably PC6400. The Powercolor X1950pro is probably the best graphics card you will find in your price range and you will also need a CPU cooler because the CPU is OEM, try looking at the Arctic Freezer 7. :)

Also what brand is your PSU? If it is a quality PSU then it should be ok (if possibly a little stretched) but if not then you will need to get a new one.

Hi semi-pro waster,

Thanks a million for your speedy reply. You have given me some good pointers there(I forgot the Psu shipped oem with no fan!!  )

My existing Psu is a Mercury 400W Atx switching power supply would this able to sustain this sort of rig?

I don't know too much about Mercury PSUs but after a little bit of digging they are apparantly made by American Media International who don't have specifications printed for a 400w version but there is a PDF for the 460w version. Going by the specifications of the 460w PSU I'd say probably not good enough for a Conroe system, it only has 18A on the 12V rail and most will recommend a minimum of 20A and the efficiency isn't fantastic either.

I'd probably suggest something like the FSP Bluestorm 500w or an Akasa Paxpower 500w as both are ATX 2.0 compliant and both solid PSUs, they do however cost around £60 though. :)
