i am totally at a loss now. anybody with any ideas please?

as much info as i can give you: -

was using it b4 xmas and the net kept going off (virgin's fault). on numerous occasions i would try all sorts to get it back on. sometimes i had to reboot modem, sometimes pc and sometimes just pull the lead out and back in.then all of a sudden, i pulled the lead out and instantly the pc rebooted and went into a reboot loop. on the 4th or 5th occasion of reboot, the monitor displayed "no input detected".

ever since then i have not been able to get anywhere.

i have tried absolutely everything no matter how small but have not found a solution. listed it all below: -

Asus A8V deluxe Rev 2
WD Raptor HDDs
Tagan PSU
Saphire 3850AGP card
Asus zonar sound card
Crucial ram
gaming case

swapped graphics card with working one from this rig.. no picture
put my graphics card in this rig..works

swapped ram.. works in this rig
ram from this rig didn't work in mine

swapped PSU from this rig..didn't work in mine

changed the mobo for an identical one..same problem

the only thing i havn't tried is swapping the case on/off/reset switch

when i turn my rig on, the whole mobo & cards light up but there are NO bios beeps at all. i get no lights on the usb keyboard or mouse and no picture.

i havn't tried the C Drive HDD because i would have expected to get a bios beep b4 windows. as i have changed the mobo and still get the same i am assuming it is not bios related.

any ideas anybody please, i don't have a clue what to try next.

i know it is old and i know i can replace it with better for a cheap price. that won't help me at the moment because all of my work and tax information is locked up in it. yes i can change drives to get it but the amount of proggies i have set up i havn't backed up at all yet.

dont think i can help much apart from giving you a few more 'have you done this?' things.
You say you swapped out the motherboard and checked everything else to no avail, well have you checked out your processor? also, does your mobo have that double digit error code lcd thingy on it (not sure how far back they go), if so what code is it reporting? FF would be normal.
Try taking out your sound card, then graphics card, and if you have 2 ram sticks, try running with only one, then try start the pc. without a graph' card the mobo should still beep, heck without ram it should still beep. so keep removing components until it works, or you smash something hehe
last thing, you said removing the lead caused the problem to start. do you have a network card or is it built onto the motherboard?

thanks for the reply veryrandom101 any suggestion is better than none when i am out of ideas.

unfortunately on all accounts, i have just forgotten to type it. i have actually tried everything you have said except the lcd code thing you mention, i think this 939 board precedes that.
even with the ram/graphics card out out i got no bios beeps which is why i scratched my head, it does this on both boards.
i tried with 1 stick of ram too. i tried my ram in this machine..works a treat. the Ethernet lead is connected to an onboard one.

thanks for trying anyway.

very odd problem

I did have a problem with my board when my case managed to break one of my HDDs it got stuck on post pretty much.

check the HDD in other words, mine did post but it got stuck, and I couldn't get into BIOS in the end

the only thing it can be then is the cpu, as im sure you tried starting without the HDD. that leaves everything else out
BTW what is your processor?

somehow unplugging the lead from the o/b net adapter caused some shorting somewhere, and totally blew 'the unknown thing' to bits.

Good thing is since you say you have an old system, it should be really cheap to get a new processor for it, maybe even used, but it might prove difficult to find. worth it in the end for your apps etc..
And if it does work, changing the cpu for an identical one should mean the system will boot up straight away.
Let me know what cpu you have, and i'll see whats out there. After all, you havent tried everything till you do that :p

The only time I had a non-working display and no bios beeps was when I forgot that my mobo had two power connectors and I'd only plugged one in :p

been out till late recently.

thanks for all of the replies but sorry to burst your bubble on what you thought was the answer veryrandom101 but it wasn't that, well at least i don't think it is in the way you think. the cpu was an AMD Athlon 64 4400 X2.

as this rig is a 939 board i took the chip out of mine..it worked fine in this one. i put this old 3.5G amd in my rig..same problem.

now i have actually taken every single piece out of my rig individually and i mean EVERY piece, put it in this one and tested. everything worked.

yesterday i remembered something from about 2 months of updating this rig originally. if what i remeber is correct in the fact that Asus made a really cr4ppy design with this particular board, i know what the problem is and i cannot rectify it.

the bios version they had in from preset would not recognise certain chips. when i orginally dropped this 4.4 x2 in it i lost video out and bios beeps. Asus themselves told me i needed to flash the bios to a later version. at the time it was fine because i just dropped my old chip back in and it worked a treat. so then i flashed it.

i believe that somehow this has reverted to factory default and as i do not have an older chip anymore, i don't stand a chance of being able to get this mobo to come on with video out. basically, because of this Asus cr4p, i am screwed.

that is, if what i am thinking is true/correct.

Older Chip?

As in what?

I have a Winchester 3500 single core job somewhere you are more than welcome to have ( on a short term basis cos I may need it myself one day )
