Thinking about changing this system to a more upto-date one in the not to distant future, but more importantly going for Micro ATX and silent cooling (not water), was thinking about going back to the green team since i have had a good run with 'evil inside'. Problem is, the Phenom II X6 is a spiffing price for a six-core processor, plus AM3 motherboards are reasonably priced and there are some decent MATX ones about, the big problem for me is the looming release of Bulldozer, honest opinion needed, is it worth waiting do you think to see what Bulldozer offers and prices, etc.? my system is pretty decent at the minute, my only problems with it are the tower is enormous and its a little noisy, plus one two of my ram modules are dead (not sure why, so currently 4Gb) and DDR2 is more expensive than DDR3, so you see the dilemma?! :D any advice would be more than appreciated, would consider going Intel again if Bulldozer doesn't offer anything reasonable, very good price/performance, etc. but i do enjoy a bit of overclocking and im not really wanting on the K editions.

4GB of RAM is plenty, so no need to rush an upgrade for that reason. The only way to find out if Bulldozer is worth waiting for is to wait for it. I'd suggest you do that unless the upgrade bug is biting really hard.

If you really want to upgrade now Sandy Bridge is where the sensible money goes.

Also I think you get the record for the worlds longest sentence :p

yeah the long sentence, was having a Stacey Soloman style moment, a moment of sheer non-clarity! the biggest reason for a change is to save space, currently taken up by this rather large contraption, seemed like a good idea at the time but sorta starting to not like it too much.

have fond memories of AMD from past experiences, damnit, gonna have to wait to be Bulldozed, any ideas on official launch date? suppose it will give me time to look at some other components, etc. planning on keeping my 4870X2 just giving it a custom cooling job! also worth noting, this bug has been biting me leg for a couple of months now, but i shall resist temptation! :D

If the rumours are true that Bulldozer might actually restore some competition, I think it'll be worth hanging on for. A price war between AMD and Intel, plus retailers trying to shift old stock, could mean some very good hardware at decent prices.

Not long to wait now.

yeah, been reading up on BD a bit recently, seems pretty different to current AMD processors in numerous ways. two physical cores on a piece of silicon not much bigger than a single core, sounds like a win - win situation, plus there are lots of rumours about high clock-speeds as well plus an enhanced turbo-boost function, also much improved energy saving functionality. whats the first desktop ones due to hit the market, Zambezi? which is four modules, eight 'interger' cores right?

It's clear that Intel have been resting on their laurels for quite some time. Practically every recent Intel CPU, bar some recent 32nm versions (and sandy bridge in particular) has overclocked massively. If AMD were competitive at the higher end I'm sure we'd have seen the same silicon released at higher clock speeds in the first place.

personally hope Bulldozer comes along and totally sucker punches Intel, you need that in a competative environment from time to time, think the last time for me was K8 vs. Netburst, not only was K8 faster it was cooler, more energy efficient and an overall cheaper platform! to be honest the whole Intel 'Core' resurgance wasn't really a sucker punch, because it was expected for quite some time! was hoping they wouldn't cancel their Larrabee GPU as well, but looks like its mothballed for the time being at least, was about time that someone shook up the graphics market as well, ATI and NVIDIA have just been trading blows for years now and still niether of them have any real advantage over the other. :D

I'd say wait, parts now are only going to get cheaper and if you think that bulldozer is just a waste of money (which I doubt) then the chips that are around now will be cheaper meaning you will be able to get other better components like the 6990 if it comes out.

apparently Q2 2011 whenever that is, bearing in mind those release dates will be based on the dates in the US if their quarterly calendar is different, aren't there some people who work for OCUK on these forums, think they can give us any heads up on release dates or NDA prevent that sort of thing?

if its based on the US fiscal year (which i think it is) then according to AMD press releases, the first Bulldozer CPUs for desktop codenamed 'Zambezi' (4 module, 8 cores) will be released sometime in Q2 of 2011, which is between February and May, hope its the earlier part of Q2 personally since im really curious to know how they perform in real-world conditions..!

q2 oh i was expecting earlier, dont think i will wait

Yeah Im hoping its very early Q2, since thats not really that long. Each quarter is three months right? and the US fiscal year which is what quarters are based on starts in October, so October - december is Q1, January - March is Q2, april (where UK fiscal year starts) - june is Q3 and July - September is Q4, at least thats how I read into it. so AMD being a california based company would surely use the US one which puts Q2 as January - March, which would mean Bulldozer should begin appearing before the end of March... So how come we have no pre-order information, hell no actual name for the product unless that is its literal name, gone is Phenom and bring forth Bulldozer, thats just weird. :D

might be worth noting, just found a AM3+ board called MSI Big Bang Conqueror, socket AM3+, four DDR3 slots, four! PCI-E 16x, AMD 990FX chipset, USB 3.0, looks to be an enthusiast orientated board, but its the first Bulldozer compatible board I have seen anything about, so the release must be coming close...! :)

MSI reps were quoted as saying that it would be released pretty much as soon as it's ready, well in advance of Bulldozer's (early April) release.

Hardware looks finalised and spec is finalised. I'd imagine the initial production run may already have started and they'll be released as soon as their BIOS team have good, stable BIOS for Deneb & Thubans. I'd guess late Feb or early March release.

hmm, well thank you good sir, you might have just convinced me to wait for Bulldozer, to come along and demolish all those pesky sand bridges that Intel has chucked up everywhere, that'll teach 'em!

Aye definately wait for bulldozer, theres a lot of hype surrounding it, nothing solid yet but i expect to see some leaked benches or something reasonably soon.

Theres a CPUZ pic floating around of what is apparently bulldozer at 3.8ghz but the guy has blanked out all the info on it, either because its fake or hes afraid of breaking some kind of NDA.

would suspect fake personally, is that the one with the Family and Ext. Family blocked out, why may I ask would you want to hide what is under their? its nothing really special 'oh my god, its family F...!' and this individual cares why exactly? hence why I suspect it is fake, plus the Vcore is insanely low! :)
