Until now I've never bothered with a smart-phone, but some long travel times and the release of Hearthstone on mobile has made me consider there may be some merit in finally replacing my pay-as-you-go Ericsson, which has more chance of picking up Ceefax than the internet.

My main areas of interest would be:

Hearthstone
WoW-Mobile Armory Auction house thing
Browsing web pages
Probably best if it is on the EE network as this is good in my area
If there is just a few quid difference it would be nice if it was on the lighter side but not essential

Things I don’t care about:
Posing. It can look like a fake turd for all I care.
Lots of video and music streaming. The odd thing might be handy, but wouldn’t be regular use.
Camera quality.
Don’t particularly mind if it is IPhone or Android.
I don’t actually make that many calls or texts...but you know, it does need to be able to ;)

The thing is it is very easy to go overkill and spend loads because of the Hearthstone requirement. I know I need at least a semi-decent processor and screen resolution for that, but I don’t know where that line should be drawn before we’re paying over the odds for no reason. The official list at https://eu.battle.net/support/en/article/hearthstone-system-requirements is also incomplete, out of date, and who knows what the mean by verified to run it "well".

Does anyone have any advice on minimum spec, or maybe some phones that aren’t quite the latest and greatest but will definitely fulfil the above at good value? I presume I’m better off going contract now just because I will be using data for those apps, but probably only need a smallish allowance if not doing videos much? Pretty much any advice would be great.

I can only provide this info on the assumption you're not a face hunter. I have a hearthstone addiction too and I play it on all handsets / tablets I try as part of my job to sorta test their graphical prowess. The good news is it works OK on a lot of devices but if you want the best experience right now you need something with a Snapdragon 805+ (edit: 801's probably OK thinking about it) processor (mid/high devices in the last year) or on the Apple side, a 5S/6. Lower than this is playable but it's not quite as smooth - try to steal/borrow someones handset to test it - if you can manage on say, a Galaxy S4 (which is 2 years old now and uses a snapdragon 600) then it's going to be cheap to pick one up as people are selling their S4's to buy S6's right now. There's a few youtube videos of people demoing it on handsets - check these out.

Screen size helps a great deal on the mobile client tbh, while the cards are down in the bottom right (as opposed to centre like tablet/pc), the extra size is easier for targeting. If you have example phones you're looking at we can probably give you some feedback as to performance.

Definitely not a face hunter, I tend to play priest. Very, very, badly! I hadn't thought of looking on youtube for phone videos, will take a look and see, thanks.

The kind of thing I was considering was stuff like these (which sound like they might be similar to the S4 you mentioned):

LG G4c - 720x1280, 1.5GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 610

Sony Xperia M4 Aqua - 720x1280, Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 & quad-core 1.0 GHz Cortex-A53 (...I don't really know what it means by that)

Thanks again
