I recently have got my hands on a a 2.4GHZ socket a athlon, 512MB of ram, and a 5700 256MB card, along with a PSU.

I plan to nuke the 2 IDE hard drives in my Conroe system, and replace with a 400GB sata one (partioned, of course).

Use a router to connect the 2 system, and use the Socket a athlon as a file server.

I might use windows XP Pro and WIndows Vista Premium.

Will there be any trouble using stuff like mapping drives between the 2? and is there any advice or stuff that I should do other than the obvious?

Finally does anyone have any pictures of their own setup? to give me some ideas of the best way of placing it? at the moment I am thinking of not even putting it in a case, and just putting the lot in a wood cupboard...

Is that ok? the cupboard has no back, so air should not be to much of an issue...

No pics, but my domain controller/file server/web server/email server are two laptops stripped from their cases with a 92mm fan over each (File server has two 320gb USB 2.0 drives). Placed onto a shelf under my desk, invisible, and silent.

Both accessed through MSTSC (remote desktop), and both run server 2003, they have been up and running for around 4 months 24/7 now.

File server you say? :D
Be afraid of sata snake, be very afraid.....

I have a file server. It runs Open Suse 10.1.
It is based on an Athlon chip, 512 MB RAM, 4 x 80 GB HDD, 1 x 120 GB HDD.

It started life as a home server at university for gentlemen's photography. Back then it was a P133 with 256 MB RAM and a 40 GB HDD.

It then evolved, this file server doesn't need much spec for my use.

It hasn't got much room by today's standards, but the 4 HDDs are in RAID 5 and it's never failed on me.

Anyway, for the amount of time I use it, I couldn't justify leaving it on 24/7, so I bought Linksys NSLU2 with a USB 320 GB HDD. This is left on 24/7 and uses minimal electricity. It runs Debian Etch and shares files using Samba.

Every week, I'll back up what I need from 'slug' to 'susy' and job done.

Here we go... this is a shot before it was finished.

It's pretty close to silent.

Passive PSU (DIY)
Theres now 2 x 120mm fans (running at 3.5v) on the front, to cool the hard drives. They are around 600rpm I think, and the hard drive suspension means you cannot hear the seeks.

I done this as I gotta sleep in the same room as it. :)

Here's mine, people with a cable phobia, look away!

OS: Server 2003 x64

Has room for 2 more drives using a strange caddy plate that’s in the case, but I fear they would overheat due to placement and two more removable drives using the Icydock caddies, believe it or not I’ve almost run out of space already so I’m going to grab a Norco 1220 http://www.norcotek.com/DS-1220.php

It’s relatively new and unfortunately it’s been through 4 drive RMA’s already, but WD are really good with the turn-arounds. All four were from the same delivery so I’m guessing the courier did something dodgy with them. I had to do a little case filing and drive filing to fit the optical drive but nothing drastic.

Windows 2003 Server

Acts as a FTP server, Ventrilo Server, remote desktop access server and a download rig.

I dont need anything more meaty at all, it serves everything and copes fine with FTP downloads and had 8 people on at once on Ventrilo.
