Advising my better half to get the DS rather than the PSP for her sprog. Wise??

My son has the DS and loves it.

I have used the PSP and loved the better graphics but the DS just seems to have the better games and the "fun" appeal.

Her daughter is 9 and I have said the DS lite is better suited because:

1) Its cheaper.

2) Its cheaper, so not so bad if its lost/ broken.

3) Better games suited to her age group.

4) More fun than pose of the PSP.

Am I making a good argument here or am I behind the times and the PSP is the better choice?

I agree with your opinion.
I've owned both and as much as I liked the PSP for the graphics and it's media capabilities, the loading times were ultimately annoying. Battery life wasn't the greatest aswell, which I think is important for a hand-held.

I don't even know how long the DS battery life is, all I know is that it lasts much longer than my PSP's ever did. And with games like Brain Training, etc, it's much more of a laugh.
Like you say, there are also a lot more games suited to the younger age group.

DS is far more fun in my opinion and with games like nintendogs she will prolly love it. Not many games on the PSP for younger peeps anyways. Also the PSP doesnt feel as tough, with the DS Lite I get the feeling I could drop it and it would still work, not the PSP which seems like it would break tbh.

Have both, the DS is infinitely superior. New Super Mario Bros, Mario 64 DS and Mario Kart are all better than any games I've played on the PSP, and thats without mentioning Castlevania which many say is the best game on the console!

ds is orientated more for kids ( hard plastic cover, colour scheme, a lot of real kids games) whereas the PSP is more of an adult toy imho

For a 9 year old girl its got to be the DS. Many fun games that can appeal to either gender. Things like wario ware, youshi touch, nintendogs are the kind of things I think a girly girl would like. If she's a tomboy then there's still more than enough stuff for her.

Also if your boy has one they could always do multiplayer.

I don't really agree with that. I'm 29 and I have a DS Lite and love it. I got a Jap PSP when they were first released and was initially impressed with the quality of graphics, but now I realise that the games are just shredded versions of PS2 games (I sold my PSP to get my DS). The DS is so much more fun, and it's not just kids who want to have fun. Yes, it may be more "colourful" and so appeal to kids, but I certainly don't think that the PSP is more grown up than it. Better graphics doesn't make it an adult toy, or even a better console.

It seems like the DS is perfect for the OP as well as any adult who is looking for a fun handheld console

I think you misunderstood me

My post was only saying that due to a few things inparticular - like the really practical (as apposed to more delicate casing of the PSP for example) the DS has been encased in hard wearing plastic for kids who are more likely to bash them around. Also if the DS was aimed at everyone then possibly Nintendo wouldnt have had such whacky designs ( which put me off the initial release, as well as reportedly being a little flimsy) - the lite version is a lot better and I have considered getting one now

Some games are definitely for the whole market, but there are some also which are definitely there to attract small kids - absolutely nothing wrong with that at all, was just saying that nintendo have made an effort to market it towards this part of the market.

AS stated, of course gadget and games lovers alike will like one or both no matter what their age - didnt mean to imply in its present guise it wouldnt appeal to those older, it certainly does

One thing I found out about the PSP was how it isn't that delicate. I dropped mine twice (once from 2 foot up onto the floor of a London underground tube train) and it didn't get damaged at all; no scratches, cracks, broken buttons, dead pixels :eek:

I'd get the DS lite cos the other kids have more chance of having it aswell which'll be good for playing wireless multiplayer and such.

:O I love the DS. IMO it's for everybody and I know more adults with it than kids. Just because the graphics are cartoony, doesn't mean it's kiddy

Definately the most innovative and one of the most fun consoles to date.

Had my psp's for 6 months and used it only a handful of times now i have a Ds and i carnt keep off it plus for a child i would definatly get the Ds, also its a lot more fun too play and i prefer the games.
