Hi.

However much i would like to upgrade to Core 2 Duo, i won't be able to. Well i can but im going to uni soon and i'd like to save that money as its a bit pricey to buy a new motherbaord and CPU.

So im looking for an upgrade for my aging AMD 4000+ San Diego. Could someone recommend me an AMD Dual-Core? I would like something that offers a significant improvement over my single core CPU whilst not breaking the bank. One that is cheap whilst offering good performance. I don't really do overclocking as im too lazy and scared of breaking anything :p I mainly use my PC for gaming and here is my current setup:

A8N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard (939)
AMD 4000+ San Diego
Leadtek Winfast 7900GT Extreme (pre-overclocked)
2GB of PC3200
X-Fi Xtreme
300GB Maxtor HD
Antec Neo HE 500

Thanks!

Problem is though that for single threaded apps the 4400+ will be slower than the 4000+, or at best around the same performance due to running background tasks on the spare core.

If you are running multiple apps at the same time or multithreaded apps it will be better of course.

Difficult to suggest any of the x2 CPUs that will ensure a 'significant improvement' unless you are going to overclock.

Yes - you would need to get a 4800+ x2 to equal the performance of your 4000 in single core apps - eg games - so quite a pricey upgrade for not a lot I'm afraid.
You could almost justify it if the 4800+ was about the £210 price it was a short while ago and flog your old cpu on ebay, but for £300 it's too pricey. And it doesn't look like any more 939 4800s are going to become available as their production is being discontinued by AMD.
You could always get an fx60 I suppose....

Go for the Amd 4400+ X2, I am near sure it uses an 11x multiplier so increasing the Fsb by 18mhz - 20mhz gives you a 4800+ X2, surely this is very feasible? and cost effective :)

just interested what dual core amd is the same as 2x 3800 single cores, as in each core being 2.5ghz stock
