Hello All,

Recently, I had a problem with FileZilla which caused it to display adverts on my compluter

I uninstalled FileZilla and the ad that came with it went :D

But now, a new ad has appeared, as soon as I start my computer an internet explorer window opens and displays an ad from ad.atdmt.com but I haven't downloaded or installed anything since I uninstalled FileZilla except for Windows build 1511. So my question is, is there any way of tracking the source of this ad and seeing if there is any way of getting rid of it, I have found one thing that appears to be common but may be a coincidence, the "plugged in" sound plays shortly before the ad opens, but the ad doesn't open on every startup, only most.

Are you sure the ads aren't supplied by a separate program that was bundled with filezilla, but isn't part of the program and needs to be uninstalled separately? There may be another entry in your control panel programs

if you get the downloads from a 3rd party source they could install adware/malware in the install. Also even legitimate sources like to install browsers and change your default search engines. Case in point flash likes to install mcaffee.

With most of these legitimate sources you need to follow the install steps carefully. You need to select cusom install prefs/options and unselect the addon (adware) software.

there's no free lunch and the only way these free software make money is by getting comissions of the internet browser companies who make money from defaulting to specific search engines who in turn make money from ppc ads

unless you can come up with a way for companies like filezilla, clonezilla etc then the adware packing wont stop any time soon.

Some of these add-ons that create adverts can be very nasty!

They install themselves into the registry and can't be removed from IE easily, my ex gf's dad had a few that had injected themselves pretty much into his registry and took a bit of effort to remove.

If you go into IE > Internet Options > Programs > Manage Add-ons

You should see it under one of the tabs, but it might be greyed out to disable it or remove, if that's the case then you need to hunt through the registry to remove it, I'll see if I can find some helpful links that I used back then.

ad.atdmt.com is a cookie, something to do with Atlassolutions.

If you were running a decent ad blocker in the browser like ublock origin it would have blocked sorceforge from opening.

I have found a solution!

After installing Adblock in IE it appears to kill the process that starts up, definetley not a permanent fix but it will do! The only thing that happens now is the IE logo will pop up in the taskbar for about half a second, but I can deal with that!

It may be that adblock is stoppoing the ad that is getting served, but it's not killing the process that is attempting to show the ad in the first place. You may find this shows different ads or is a trojan capable of downloading other malicious things to your PC. You've just hidden the symptom, not the cause, and you should really try to fix it properly.

I ran hitman pro and it found a lot of tracking cookies, one was for atdmt! Its removed it so Im going to remove adblock and see what happens, but in the meantime here's the hijackthis log:-

To be fair, that's probably the safest option with least hassle at the end of the day. That's what I'd have done in your position.

i have a adware wrap itelf into a file that needed to disable antivirus to run. pretty sneaky. i just googled the app and downloaded the first of the list. the site cloned the original makers site and just compiled adware onto it.

long story short it absolutrely crippled the machine. it instally 4 different docked windows ad bars. such greedy ****es. they're not happy to make a few cents by installing one, they had to install 4! and render the laptop useless.
