I have run the fix it programme as per your link and the result states

"Video card doesn't support required display settings" Fix Status - Not Fixed

It has been running Aero fine since I got it, I wonder if this is also causing the window Index to fail to?

Thanks for all the tips so far:

Scannow was all clear.

I have removed cleaned down and re inserted the graphics card in a new PCI slot, removed and fresh installed the drivers but still no Aero and some problem with Windows Index not being able to assess the system?

I have used my windows disk and have done the non destructive "upgrade" option and this has put Aero back on, Windows update is currently running and I will see if it holds after the restart.

Before I accept the updates I will try running the Windows Index to see if that works at the moment.

OK

Aero still on

Windows Index successfully completed with a score of 7.8

currently installing 98 updates and will see what happens after reboot.

OK so far so good.

I have a Windows compatability note on my desktop that says the following might not work properly and advised to update the drivers, as follows:

These devices might not work properly after the upgrade. Before upgrading, we recommend updating the drivers for these devices. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel and search for "update device drivers", or go to the device manufacturer's website to search for updated drivers.

Universal Serial Bus controllers: Atheros Valkyrie BootROM

Can anyone advise what the Atheros Valkyrie BootROM is as where its best to update the driver?

Thanks

Thanks again for your assistance. Everything is still working as it should so I assume it may have been some corrupted windows files and running the Windows disks has sorted it.

Cheers

Well unfortunately I spoke to soon.

Windows update showed a few more updates tonight and after I installed them Aero has gone off again, the updates were :

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2709981)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2574819)
Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2592687)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2732487)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2529073)
Platform Update for Windows 7 x64-Edition (KB2670838)
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2532531)
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB982018)

So back to the drawing board, one of these has caused the problem.

OK trying to be methodical I have uninstalled the platform update

Platform Update for Windows 7 x64-Edition (KB2670838)

And Aero is back on so I guess it is this update that is causing the problem. I just dont know if not installing it will cause any future issues or risks, although it is not a security update so maybe its ok to leave it for now.

Any suggestions?

Well problem is back again :( Aero failed, Windows Desktop Manager keep shutting down etc

I have 2 hard drives C:/ which is an SSD with windows on it and the boot, and D:/ is 1TB and has all other stuff on it.

If I do a new install of windows will I still keep my data on my D: drive but lose everything on the SSD?

And is it as straight forward as just put the windows disk in and select the "install" instead of update option and let it do its thing?

Cheers

Performed full virus scan and it was clear.

So can you please tell me that if I perform a destructive full re install of windows I will only loose data from the Hard Drive windows is being put on?

As this appears to be my only option to get everything reinstalled correctly?

Thanks

Al

Hi again

I unplugged the second hard drive and reinstalled windows on the SSD.

After I plugged the 2nd Hard drive back in they programs and contents of the drive dont show up in the list when you press the "windows (start)" button or when you go to the add or remove programs via the control panel.

I then tried CCleaner program and that also is not showing any of the contents of the 2 nd Hard drive.

Drive manager shows all the drives that are plugged in and shows them correctly (no unallocated etc)

How do I get the system to see the 2nd Hard drive again and display the contents in the various utilities?

That's how I got the PC from Overclockers, they set the OS on the SSD and had the
2nd drive empty

So I will need to wipe everything and reinstall on the 1 Hard drive and start all over?

I just mainly have loads of games so its just a case of methodically reinstalling all them after.

As im a noob lol, do I do the following:

1. Delete the drive im going to install windows on
2. unplug the SSD
3. Alter the boot order so the planned OS drive is first
4. place windows cd in and install

Or do I just unplug the SSD, amend the boot order, then put in the windows CD and install?

well deleted all and reinstalled on the 1TB hard drive, and now reintalling my stuff with no issues at this time.

My index score went from 7.8 to 5.9 as the SSD previously scored (7.8) and the normal HD scores 5.9 but everything else is the same.
