Aero is the NVIDIA killer?!!!

I've just finished rebuilding my PC, installed Vista, installed the drivers.

On the ASUS driver disk it includes 3DMark Vantage so thought I would give it a try, first test goes fine, second test crashes to desktop with the dreaded 'nvidia driver has stopped working but was recovered', not good for brand new system and clean OS.

Googled the error to see if there were any fixes, most sites say use the latest driver, not helpful when you have the latest already. Found a site that suggested Aero is the issue, so I disabled it and now can happily run 3DMark over and over no problems.... WTH????!!!!

Anyone come accross this?

Also, can anyone tell me if 3DMark Vantage uses SLi by default, I've never used this version before so have no basis for comparism, the score was P22914.

just another reason to add to the long list of reasons to not use Vista. Bring out Windows 7 asap!

Vista bashing: most of it's unsubstantiated and all of it's incredibly boring, so let's not go there :)

Vantage does use SLI and a score of 22914 would indicate that it's working!

As for the Aero issue.. that's odd. Which version of the nV driver are you using? Do you have SP1 installed?

I figured that as it said my system was in the top 20% of results it was working, but thanks for clearing that one up!

I've got the latest driver installed, version 180 and it's a clean install of Vista SP1.

Hmm ok it's not Aero, same thing happened just 5 mins into playing Crysis...
Surely this should not be happening....

I've fixed it! :D

All I can say is, never reading the manual doesn't always pay off...

"The PCI-E connectors supplied with your HX1000W power supply work with both 6 and 8 pin style video cards. Connect the appropriate PCI-E cables to the power socket of your PCI-Express video card if required. If your video card requires two PCI-E connectors do not connect a hardwired PCI-E connector and a modular connector to the same video card."

Played Crysis 1920x1200/Very High/16xAA for half and hour with no problems whatsoever! (25 fps not exactly ideal but a good stress test in itself I guess)

Only small annoying thing now, where the hell is the option in the NV control panel with v. 180 (latest) driver to disable the stupid SLi performance overlay thing?

Thanks to those of you who tried to help as well :)

Tbh mate, there isn't any need for 16xAA, 4xAA should be fine and would give you a nice performance increase with that system. Play it at a playable level :)

Oh I agree completely, in fact I rarely bother with AA at all as it's barely noticable when using the screens native resolution. The aim was to make sure both video cards were being pushed as much as possible to determine that swapping the power cables round had solved the problem!

Glad you sorted it :) New cards draw a crazy amount of power.

I did actually do my homework here, used the Corsair PSU recommendation on their website, just didn't think to much about it when I put everything together! However everything is working perfectly again (with Aero on I might add) and now a happy man again :D

Did you even read the thread before you came in with your Vista-bashing tripe? The problem was nothing to do with Vista.

Indeed! I don't understand what all the negativity is towards it, it's now a very stable and robust platform imo (for me 100x more reliable than XP ever was). The fact that turning Aero off initially appeared to fix the issue I guess was northing more than mere fluke or luck or both - I would change the thread title to 'This is why you should make sure you have your SLI power connected correctly' but you can't do that on this forum :p
