According to TechReport you don't really need super fast, super tight OR triple channel memory in order to enjoy the best of a Core i7.

Suddenly a Core i7 system looks pretty appealing if you're on a mid-range budget.

Isn't this common knowledge already though? Even on DDR2 based systems, the quantity of your RAM and its rated speed has always been infinitely more important than tighter timings. If you're looking to achieve the absolute best overclocks you can then fine, a more expensive set will help you achieve them, or if you're into benching your system for e-peen purposes then it also makes sense, but for most people they would be better off buying cheaper sets.

Isn't there some proviso about using RAM rated higher than 1.6v with Core i7? Additionally, 4GB of DDR3 sits right between the prices for the 3 and 6GB kits, so you're not really saving any money.
