Affordable design software?

I'm looking for affordable alternatives to the Adobe range of vector and raster image editing software. I've tried GIMP and I just don't get on with it.

I also need a good video editing tool. Is Sony Vegas any good? Ideally I'd like to try my hand at 3D modeling too but I assume Maya etc are very expensive. Might give Blender a go.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

For vector software you could try Inkscape - its free? Here's a list of more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vector_graphics_editors

Maya costs thousands of dollars but the student version is free, Blender is fine too.

If you don't like gimp you could try Paint .Net
