after a gigabit switch

as title, i'm after a gigabit switch that is extremely reliable.

I want an 8 port switch.

I was going to pickup a netgear gs108, but is it the best one to get? It's quite a bit more expensive that some others, mainly due to its construction I believe.

thanks.

For a bog-standard switch I'd just hit a site affiliated with paypal. It'll probably be a lot cheaper and unless you've got some very high requirements/raid setups you won't notice the difference.

For reliability, you'll need to pay - I've had quite a few "cheap" gigabit switches pack up on me over the past few years. Currently got an HP 1800-8G. £100, but lifetime warranty.

Same as the Blue Netgear products. They are enterprise products. I have a Presafe router and a 16 port gigabit switch. Come with a good warranty.

With a cheaper switch then yeah...I'd expect it to break in a few years. However, if a £15 piece of equip breaks I don't really cry too much - I just buy a new one.

It's not really a false economy because £30 (15x2) to cover you for 4-6 years will probably do you until 10gig is more reasonably priced. Even if not, another £15 will keep you going for longer and you'll have still spent less than on a "high-quality" switch.

Don't get me wrong, for more 'demanding' network environments I wouldn't dream of going that route, but a home network of 3-5 PCs is hardly that.

Again, makes little/no difference assuming your PC isn't low-spec and/or you're not transferring huge files all day long. I made that mistake when buying switches too and there was virtually no difference between an older non-jumbo supporting switch and a newer one.

He makes no mention of his use, so it would be unwise to assume he won't be transferring large files continuously. After all, he did ask for a gigabit switch..

Yeah i would recommend something that supports Jumbo-Packets so you can send packets with an increased MTU. A gigabit switch needs this support imo, the GS108 can do this.

Fair point in some ways. However, 99% of users won't be transferring files for hours a day so in that way it's fair to assume that he falls into that group.

I guess I'll refrain from further comment unless the OP elaborates on what he needs the switch for :) And tbh, it doesn't bother me if he spends more than he needs to. I'm personally just a fan of saving money where I can :)

You're right and he will probably reply with something similar to what you're saying - but then again jumbo frames might be beneficial. I know it is for me, daily backups of gb's of data can get tiresome on fast ethernet, so gigabit is pretty much a necessity.

I agree with you there. I have a netgear gs116 and it is a little bit better than the old random d-link giga switch I used. Though the main thing is the extra 8 ports. Good for house LAN parties :)
