After a high performance router

Guys,

I am after a really good solid router. It needs to have 802.11G, gigabit ethernet, a decent processor to handle lots of connections at once (im sure you can guess why I need that) and advanced port forwarding options, DMZ etc etc.

Can you guys recommend one for me? I was looking at the gaming router D-link does but i see thats now been discontinued. I was also kinda tempted by the Netgear rangemax gigabit edition but I havent seen any reviews and cant find details on the spec of the processor.

Currently im using a linksys with the DDWRT firmware upgrade which is fantastic but I dont think the processor can cope with it. Plus its only base 10/100.

Any ideas?

Dan

If you're after a solid router with advanced port forwarding and DMZ controls go for a Cisco router. You'll have trouble setting it up if you don't know what you're doing but once setup, they're very capable routers that often exceed their specifications.

Cisco? Ouch! ...of course if your willing to re mortgage the house and spend the rest of your life learning how to configure it then sure, go for it. ;)

Netgear - Very solid. Used 'em for years. Wouldn't worry too much about gigabit unless you want speed while transferring huge files locally.

Have to concur with the Smoothwall advice too but as with the Cisco the curve is pretty steep. At least it's free. :D

Dlink gaming router covers all of

I have one, got it about 2 months ago from a competitor, took a while tho as it was shipped from france O.o'

cost about £80

Skynets asking how to setup network with LOTS of connections, be afraid people...............be very afraid :D

As for router, got a Netgear DG834N, very good wireless, standard 4x network connections though, but does a fine job, highly recommended.

If you are prepared for a little tinkering, why not run SmoothWall on an old discarded PC:

I second this. An old x86 PC with few gigabit Ethernet cards would do marvelously. You could then connect your DDWRT machine to it and set it to run in WAP mode, letting the Smoothwall rig take care of firewall, routing, and DHCP duties.

This is how I run my network:

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Im not sure I really want to have yet another pc set up as a router as I have 4 on full time already and my electric bill hurts enough already. I'll have to see if I can find one of those Dlink gaming routers. Im just a bit dubious due to the fact that they have been discontinued.
